Covid-19 delayed Pam Davis’ grand opening of her restaurant on Academy Street in Kingstree but it was worth the wait. Nearly four months later, she and her staff celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony for Downtown Cafe. Â
Davis is no stranger to the business. She and husband Travis ran The Smokehouse in Turbeville for eight years before closing in 2008. When they moved to Kingstree she saw the need for another food establishment. Over several years she talked with the owner of the building located at 117 N. Academy Street, and renovations were set in motion.Â
She enlisted the help of Stanley Brown for photos of scenes of the downtown area to decorate the walls. “That’s actually Academy Street,” she said, pointing to a canvas. “I wanted to name it Downtown Café, that way everybody would know it’s downtown.”
Travis has been a chef for years, going back to preparing BBQ in Greenville. The couple are backed by a staff of eight. The menu consists of a daily special, appetizers, comfort foods and specialty items such as the Academy Chicken Breast with bacon, mushrooms and cheese.
Downtown Café is open Monday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Davis recently expanded her hours to include Thursday and Friday evenings. “Because of COVID, we had to start off really slow but it’s good. Everybody is supporting us,” she said. “It’s actually better than we anticipated.”
