We’ve had a war on smoking tobacco cigarettes for over 50 years. Can you believe it? We’ve been talking about the evils of smoking tobacco for all this time. Of course, marijuana has been illegal all this time also. After all this, people are still smoking and now it looks like we will legalize marijuana. All the talk about the dangers of smoking and not even a mention of smoking marijuana might be harmful for your lungs. Well we have wars against other things too.
Cholesterol is bad for your veins and might be elevated by eating eggs. For years people told me that I shouldn’t eat egg yolks. Of course the egg lobby had commercials on television telling how great eggs were as a source of protean or whatever is in those eggs.
Now it seems that eggs aren’t such a bad things. What is amazing is that now many of my friends are getting into the egg producing business. They are not building big chicken house or things like that. They are raising free-range chickens.
A free-range chicken is a chicken that is allowed to run free in the yard. He doesn’t get all sorts of food supplements and all that stuff. They just eat bugs and other things in the yard along with a little bit of organic chicken feed.
This chicken is supposed to be healthier for you. I’ve even got friends who are raising chickens in their yards. These chickens are more like pets. However, they still lay eggs almost every day.
What a benefit. You get a pet, early alarm with a rooster crowing, and eggs almost every day. Don’t forget the greatest of all southern dishes; fried chicken. Remember that these are free-range chickens too.
With all these benefits, you have to expect a few surprises. How about shelter for the chickens? Now there is another problem. The chicken coop can’t be just any old shelter. You’ve spent all this time and money with these free-range new friends something else is going to come before you.
One of my friends has gone a little overboard. Oh, he has chickens and gets eggs daily. Now he has installed a door on the coop. Not just any door, this door is activated by a photo cell arrangement. When the sun comes up the door opens and lets the chickens venture out into the yard. At night the door closes.
They don’t have lights on so the hens will lay more eggs, Free-range, organic and all that. Sometimes the door will close early on a cloudy day. The chickens will be left out in the yard. So much for automation, more work for the new chicken farmers.
With such a high tech chicken coop, you would expect my friend to have a high tech house. He claims that he has been putting off some home repairs because of all the work he does on the chicken coop.
He says that no matter what, he is going to start on the home renovations when the back room of the house starts to separate from the main part of the house.
The floor is slanting and he is not sure if the room will pull away from the house or the roof will start leaking. Whichever occurs first, he will stop with the chickens and start repairs. Until then it is eggs and bacon every morning.
He claims it is a cave man diet and he has lost four pounds.
Of course there are other things that can happen. Have you ever heard about people and their pets starting to look alike?
Just the other day his wife came in from gathering eggs. I couldn’t help but ask. “Excuse me, are those your real legs or are you riding a chicken?”
