I’m excited for 2020 to be here. Who isn’t happy for a new year and a new chance to start new projects? Who isn’t glad that 2019 is over and you don’t have to pretend you’re still working on that dream that would change your life?
My friend Michelle said her goal for 2019 was to lose 10 pounds. She only has 15 more to go. That’s just a joke but it does underscore how hard it is to project your secret project out into the future.
My secret project for 2019 was to walk 1,000 miles on the treadmill. Well, I didn’t do it. I will say proudly that we did walk 600 miles. Now here’s the excuse. We had four weeks of vacation and two weeks of being sick. That really put a dent in our walking project. (I Know: excuses are the tools for making monuments to your forgotten dreams)
2020 is going to be different. Some good things are coming. Can you believe it? In 2020 several people have said they are going to end climate change. They haven’t explained exactly what climate change is. They’ve given no hint to how to do it or what it is. There is a bigger question though. If you know how to end climate change, why didn’t you do it in 2019? Same thing for world hunger, cancer, education reform and all the things that ail us?
After hearing that a single person can end climate change, it makes losing 10 pounds seem like a simple task. Now people are telling me that they are already tired of hearing 2020 eyeglasses jokes and can hardly wait for 2021. I bet in 2021 they’ll still be looking to lose those pesky 10 pounds that have been around so long.
This weekend is going to be a tough one. Think of all those cigarettes to smoke and that leftover bar b que we have to get out of the refrigerator. It would be a shame to waste all the food. When you think about one guy being able to end world hunger we have to do our part.
I don’t have any plans to help with the plight of the polar bears or the Antarctic penguin. Any cause that is over a couple of hundred miles away, I’m not commenting on it. It’s hard enough just getting up in the morning to walk a little bit. What would I have to do to save the world? Besides there are several people that say they can do that.
I have started on my secret project list and I have already started doing some of the things that will complete that list. It’s all mapped out and simple to implement. If Only! The map is not the territory. All that planning has 365 days to play out. The hard work starts now but next year I’ll be planning something new. At least you won’t have to hear any eye glasses jokes.
