John McGill

John Charles “Johnny” McGill, 74, husband of Helen Thompson McGill, died Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at MUSC.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 4, 2018, in the chapel of Williamsburg Funeral Home. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at the Cedar Swamp United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr. McGill was born July 1, 1944, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Charles Emory McGill and Nettie Player McGill Browder. He attended Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia and The Citadel. He was an automobile wholesaler and attended Epworth United Methodist Church. He was an avid historian of American History, an accomplished musician, a talented dancer and loved animals. A sister, Linda Spann, preceded him in death.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are: two daughters, Linda M. Wojcik (Benjamin) of Denver, Colorado; and Sarah M. Bannister (Joshua) of Mt. Pleasant; one son, John Emory McGill of Charleston; two brothers, Charles McGill and Lenton McGill; one granddaughter; and one grandson, due in September.

Henry Collins

Funeral services for Henry D. “T. Budda” Collins, conducted by Elder David L. Grayson, were held Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the Open Bible Tabernacle of Georgetown. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the House of Prayer Cemetery of Georgetown.

Mr. Collins died Monday, August 27, 2018. He was born July 28, 1960, in Georgetown, the son of Catherine Doiley Shubrick and the late Rainey Collins. He attended Andrews High School of Andrews. He was married to Joyce Ann Flowers. He was employed with several jobs over the years. His skills were in carpentry, which made him a skilled handyman.

Survivors, in addition to his mother of the home, are: two sisters, Peggie Smith of the home; and Annette Grant (David) of Georgetown; and one brother, Novell Shubrick (Deneatra) of Georgetown.

Pallbearers were Willie Weatherspoon, Eddie Johnson, Fred Holmes, Gregory Grayson, and Luke Duncan.

Baby Girl Adrianna Cheree Osby

Graveside funeral services for Baby Girl Adrianna Cheree Osby, conducted by the Rev. William F. Jamison, were held Sunday, August 26, 2018, at the Gourdine Cemetery of Pineville, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home.

Baby Girl Adrianna Cheree Osby died Saturday, August 18, 2018, in Columbia. She was born Saturday, August 18, 2018, in Columbia, the daughter of Kimberly Monique Simmons and Adrian Osby.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, both of Columbia, are: her maternal grandmother, Justine Davis (Jerome) of Pineville; maternal grandfather, Ricardo Jefferson; paternal grandparents, Edgar and Vickie Osby of Columbia; and her maternal great-grandmother, Kathleen Simmons of Pineville.

Susan Beauford

Funeral services for Mother Susan M. Beauford, conducted by the Rev. John R. Prioleau, were held Friday, August 31, 2018, at the Liberty Reformed Episcopal Church of Jamestown. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Savannah Creek Cemetery of Jamestown.

Mother Beauford died Friday, August 24, 2018, at her residence. She was born October 19, 1924, in St. Stephen, the daughter of Eddie and Nora Dingle Middleton. She graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1947 when the completion was held at the 11th grade. She was married to the late Rev. Columbus Beauford. She was a member of Liberty Reformed Episcopal Church, where she served on the Senior Choir, Pulpit Aid Committee, as Treasurer of the Missionary Society, Usher Board and Church Custodian. She was recognized as “Mother of the Church” and held the position for the past eight years. She was employed with Santee River Wool Combing Company in Jamestown for approximately 20 years.

Survivors are: one son, Andrew “Squeakie” Beauford (Debbie) of Jamestown; a grandson who was raised in the home, Gregory Beauford of Bronx, New York; one brother, Edward Middleton (Corliss) of Bronx, New York; one stepdaughter, Ellinor Beauford (Bobbie) of Alvin; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Quintin Hawkins, Darrell Hawkins, Dustin Scott, Justin Scott, Leon “Poky” Beauford, and Heyward Beauford.

Jerry Woods, Jr.

Funeral services for the Rev. Jerry Woods, Jr., conducted by Elder Naomi Plowden and Elder Jeremy Plowden, were held Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the Bibleway Temple of Faith of Lane. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Trinity Memorial Cemetery of Lane.

Rev. Woods died Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at the McLeod Hospice House of Florence. He was born February 13, 1938, in Lane, the son of the late Jerry Woods, Sr. and Susan Felder Woods. Two brothers, Lee Woods and George Woods, preceded him in death. He graduated from Greeleyville High School. Upon graduation, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and began working for the City of Philadelphia until he retired in 1993. After moving to Philadelphia, he became a member of Little Mt. Zion Baptist Church and served in unity until his “Uncle Dan” founded the Old Macedonia Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member of the trustee board. He was ordained in September 1973. He was an active pastor for 30 years, serving Immanuel Baptist Church and Old Macedonia Baptist Church. In 2013, he moved to Florence and he became a member of Bible Way Temple of Faith.

Survivors are: his wife, Phyllis Herbert Woods of the home; one daughter, Loretta Chaney (Stanley) of Vineland, New Jersey; one son, Willie Woods (Gwendolyn) of Kinston, North Carolina; one sister, Hattie Plowden (Thomas) of Lane; one brother, Daniel Woods of Aston, Pennsylvania; one honorary daughter, Lisa Stokes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one son in the ministry, Elder Michael Mosley of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Clinton Cameron

Funeral services for Clinton Cameron, conducted by Bishop Dr. Linwood Cooper, were held Friday, August 31, 2018, at the St. Mark Believers Holiness Church of Lake City. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Cameron Cemetery of Lake City.

Mr. Cameron died on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the McLeod Hospice House of Florence. He was born May 17, 1937, in Florence County, the son of the late Ezekiel “Boss” and Effie Gaskins-Cameron. Ten siblings, Sank “Rally”, Nathaniel “Lee”, Louie, Albert, JT, Winslow, Corine, Ora Mae, Pearl and Effie Lou “Nora,” preceded him in death. He received his formal education in the Lake City school system. He lived and worked in Philadelphia in construction and factory work for many years. He returned to Lake City.

Survivors are: his wife, Ernestine Cameron; three children, Ronnie Cameron, Sr. (Robyn), Moses Cameron, and Angeline Brooks (Anthony); two special nephews (caregivers), Larry Cameron (Minister Dorothy) and Alfred “Dank” Cameron, both of Lake City; one special niece who was more like a sister, Evangelist Patricia Singletary (Deacon Joe); and three grandchildren.

William McMillon

Funeral services for William “Wilbo” McMillon, conducted by the Rev. Herman Ford, Jr. and Bishop Ronald Ferguson, were held Saturday, September 1, 2018, at the Mt. Zion AME Church of Andrews. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Mt. Zion AME Cemetery of Andrews.

Mr. McMillon died Saturday, August 25, 2018. He was born November 28, 1947, in Pompano Beach, Florida, the son of the late Hardric McMillon, Sr. and Jannie Bell Grisham McMillon. He attended Broward County Schools and played football for the Tigers of Blanche Ely High School. He continued his education at Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he played football for Bethune Cookman Wildcats and earned his degree. He became a proud man of the Pompano Beach Alumni Chapter in 1978 of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. He worked in the community in various capacities throughout his career such as Pompano’s Anti-Poverty Program and recreation center. He later continued his service to the community in North Carolina. He later retired to Andrews. He was a chef and a restaurant owner for many years, “McMillon Bar-B-Que.” Four siblings, Lonnie McMillon, Juanita McMillon Dardy, Robert McMillon, and David McMillon, preceded him in death.

Survivors are: his wife, Joan Jackson of Andrews; four children, William Strong (Marsha) of Jessup, Georgia; Barri McMillon-Smith of Deerfield Beach, Florida; Tiffany Nelson (Carl) of Daytona Beach, Florida; and Corliss Soloman (Reginald) of Charlotte, North Carolina; two stepchildren, Natasha Brockington and Marcus Jackson, both of Austin, Texas; four sisters, Joyce McMillon Hayle (Neville) of Rochester, New York; Betty Jean McMillon of Pompano, Florida; Crystal McMillon Atkinson (Alvin) of Riviera Beach, Florida; and Susan McMillon Wright (Sylvester) of Delray, Florida; his “play momma,” Cara Hurd of Rochester, New York; one Godson, Evan Ferguson; and nine grandchildren.

Jackie Fulmore

Funeral services for Mrs. Jackie Frances Alford Fulmore, conducted by the Rev. Trayvon McClary, were held Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the Chapel of Peace of Lake City. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Poston Cemetery of Cades.

Mrs. Fulmore died Monday, September 3, 2018, at the Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was born August 21, 1939, in Cades, the daughter of the late John and Laura McCutcheon Alford. She was married to the late Edward D. Fulmore, Sr. Eight siblings, Matthew Alford, John Alford, Jr., Senara Alford Scott, Earline Alford Harrison, Mitchell Alford, Howard, I, Howard Alford II “Babyboy,” and Willie Dozier “W.D.” Alford, preceded her in death. She received her formal education in the Lake City Public Schools for 11 years and was a member of the first graduating class of Cades-Hebron High School. She enjoyed singing with the Glee Club. She was a member of Mount Beulah United Methodist Church. She moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Survivors are: one son, Edward D. Fulmore, Jr. (Roxanne) of Springfield, Virginia; one daughter, Jacqueline L. Fulmore-Penn of Ladysmith, Virginia; two sisters, Jeanette Alford Gordon of Lake City; and Alice Tisdale (Solomon) of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania; one brother, Herman Alford of Lake City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Joseph Kramer, Jr.

Joseph “Ray” Kramer, Jr., 83, of Kingstree, Buckeye, West Virginia and Lafayette, Indiana, died Saturday, August 18, 2018, at the Prince George Healthcare of Georgetown.

Mr. Kramer’s ashes will be spread and a memorial held at the gravesites of his mother and father in Hillsboro, West Virginia at a future time.

Born on a small farm in Buckeye, West Virginia on January 13, 1935, he attended Hillsboro High School and worked on the farm raising and showing championship sheep and cattle.  He made multiple appearances at the Grand National Championships in Chicago showing his prized sheep.  He entered the Army in 1957, but then took an early discharge due to his father’s death (Joseph Ray Kramer, Sr.) and returned home to run the farm and be with his mother (Bertie Marie Kramer) and younger sister (Mary Margie Fisher). He was married to the late Shirley M. Harvey. In 1965, he gave up farming and moved to Lafayette, Indiana to work in the construction industry. He eventually moved back to Buckeye, West Virginia then on to Kingstree, where he made his final home.

Survivors are: one sister, Mary Margie Fisher (Charles) of Kingstree; and three children, Robert Lilly (Debra) of Columbus, Indiana; Katie Green of Peterstown, West Virginia; and Nora Adams of Lafayette, Indiana.

Daisy Scott

Funeral services for the Rev. Daisy Mae Segres Scott, conducted by the Rev. Heyward Segars and Pastor Reginald Segres, Sr., were held Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the Mt. Zion Apostolic Faith Holiness Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Pressley’s Funeral Home, followed at the Greenlawn Cemetery of Kingstree.

Rev. Scott died Friday, August 17, 2018, at the McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence. She was born April 4, 1942, in Williamsburg County, Kingstree, the daughter of the late Rev. Eugene Segres, Sr. and Virginia McClary Segres. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Apostolic Faith Church in the Holy Woods and in Florence, where she was active in many areas of church life. She attended Williamsburg County public schools. She graduated from Tomlinson High School in 1960. After graduation she worked at Dr. Cooper’s dentist office as a dental assistant and secretary. In 1964 Warsaw Sewing manufacturer decided to hire African American women. She took the test for the job and made the second highest score among all of the test takers. She was one of the first African American women to work at Warsaw Sewing. She was also one of the fastest sewers. On February 1, 1971, she opened the doors to Kindale Park Day Care Center. The day care center was opened for 43 years. Later in life she attended cosmetology school and earned a master barber license to help in her daughter’s barbershop. Two siblings, Sally Segres Wilson and the Rev. Nathaniel Segres, Sr., preceded her in death.  

Survivors are: her husband, Deacon Joshua Scott Sr.; six children, Deaconess Verdenice “Deannie” Scott and Joshua Scott, Jr., both of Kingstree; Veronica Scott Fulton (Dwight) of Jacksonville, Florida; Valerie Scott Dickey and Irvin Erskine Scott (Latoya), both of Atlanta, Georgia; and Leroy Scott, Sr. (Tangie) of Sacramento, California; 10 siblings, the Rev. Melvin Segars, Sr., the Rev. Eugene Segres, Jr. (Gertie), Deacon Theophilus Segres, and Gail Pressley (Leonard), all of Kingstree; the Rev. Eli Segres (Karolyn) of Aiken; Minister Berthena Conyers (McKeever) of Greeleyville; Richard Segres of Woodbridge, Virginia; Minister Barbara Glen (Alvin) of Dorchester; the Rev. Dennis Segres (Vickie) of Birmingham, Alabama; and Jeanette McCrea (Kenny) of Columbia; and seven grandchildren.

Bertha Robinson

Funeral services for Bertha Lee “Bert” Robinson, conducted by Bishop Roderick Sumter and Bishop James Robinson, were held Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at the White Chapel Holiness Church of St. Stephen. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Holy Hill Church Cemetery of Alvin.

Ms. Robinson died Monday, August 27, 2018, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born November 9, 1952, in Berkeley County. She was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by Pizza Hut, Hardee’s, Berkeley Industries, and Lake Moultrie Nursing Home, where she later retired. Her mother, Sannie Brown, her father, Clarence Robinson, and three siblings, Leila Mae Willis, Lilly Mae Milford, and Clarence Robinson, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: one son, Christopher Robinson (Rita) of Jacksonville, Florida; one brother, Bishop James Robinson of St. Stephen; three sisters, Elvina Pate of Moncks Corner; Williemae Palmer (Willie Joe) of Bonneau; and Victoria Brown (James) of St. Stephen; and two grandchildren.

Baby Boy Ricky Josiah Nesmith

Graveside funeral services for Baby Boy Ricky Josiah Nesmith, conducted by the Rev. David Washington, were held Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the St. James Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery of Greeleyville.

Baby Boy Ricky Josiah Nesmith died Monday, September 3, 2018, at the McLeod Clarendon Hospital of Manning. He was born Monday, September 3, 2018, at the McLeod Clarendon Hospital of Manning, the son of Angela Footman and Ricky Joe Nesmith.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, both of Kingstree, are: his grandparents, Johnny (Linda) Nelson of Kingstree.

Thomas Carey

Funeral services for Thomas Lawrence Carey, conducted by Junior Bishop Chauncey Croker and the Rev. Valentine Williams, were held Thursday, September 6, 2018, at the Canaan Pentecostal Church of St. Stephen. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Ft. Jackson National Cemetery of Columbia.

Mr. Carey died Wednesday, August 29, 2018, at his residence. He was born January 29, 1931, the son of the late Townsend Carey and Adlay Thomas Carey. He was the stepson of Eliza Simpson Carey. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Esmont, Virginia. He attended high school in Esmont, Virginia. Soon after graduation, he joined the United States Army and served in active duty during the Korean War. After serving his country, he moved to New York City, where he worked for a local paper company for many years and drove a “cab” part-time. He became an entrepreneur inheriting the family business in Esmont, Virginia in 1973. He was owner of a grocery store. He bought a second grocery store approximately four years later. He relocated to St. Stephen in 1983. He became the owner of Carey’s restaurant in St. Stephen. Six siblings, Matthew Carey, Louise Johnson, Cora Sam, Betsy Page, Warnuder Rippy, and Viola Anderson, preceded him in death.

Survivors are: his wife, Vivian Carey; one daughter, Yvonne Carey Adkins (Steven); one son, Kenneth Paulin (Emma); one brother, Emmanuel Casey (Mary) of Esmont, Virginia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jermaine Harris, Travis Allen, Shawn Paulin, V’Jay Campbell, Winston Wills, and Jayce Derrick.

Mary Matthews

Mary Elizabeth “Libby” McAllister Matthews, 82, widow of Oscar Howard Matthews, died Sunday, September 9, 2018, at her residence.

Funeral services celebrating her life were held Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at the Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at the Smith Cemetery.

Mrs. Matthews was born September 8, 1936, in Kingstree, the daughter of the late William Wright and Mary Rowena Powell McAllister. She was educated in the Williamsburg County Schools and was retired as purchasing agent from Milliken in Kingstree after over 40 years of service. She was a member of Broad Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the WMs. Three siblings, Ann Dukes, Charles McAllister, and Carl McAllister, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: three children, Donald “Pee Wee” Matthews (Shari), Joey Matthews (Fran), and Kathy Thompson (Randell); two sisters, Rose Carraway and Deola Cumbee; one brother, Billy McAllister (Jeanette); four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
