Sallie Mescher

Mrs. Sallie Kate “Kitty” Stanley Mescher, 84, died Saturday, March 31, 2018, in Horry County.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Russell Funeral Chapel, followed at the Garden of Devotion Cemetery in Hemingway.

Mrs. Mescher was born June 23, 1933, in Kingstree, the daughter of George A. Stanley and Mary W. Elks. She graduated from Winthrop College in 1955 and later received a Masters in Education from University of South Carolina. She was married to the late Reed Clifton Tanner, Jr., and resided in Georgetown, where she was a teacher. She later married William C. “Bill” Mescher and moved to Pinopolis.
 She served as president for the Berkeley Citizens Board, and chairwoman of the S.C. Board of Disabilities and Special Needs. She was a leader of the Palmetto Cabinet, Bono Circle of Moncks Corner United Methodist Church, Berkeley County Republican Party, Berkeley County Historical Society, and the Francis Marion Trail Commission. She was a founder of the Francis Marion Brigade Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and championed many local efforts to celebrate the heroics of Francis Marion in the American Revolutionary War. Four siblings, George A. Stanley, John B. Stanley, Mary S. Burroughs, and Rose S. McClary, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: one son, Reed C. Tanner, III; one daughter, Mary Kate “Kathy” Johnson; one sister, Jessie S. Dubard (Fred); one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and one step-grandson.

Inetha Dingle

Funeral services for Mrs. Inetha Waring Dingle, conducted by the Rev. Willie D. Rivers, were held Thursday, March 29, 2018, at the St. Matthew Baptist Church of St. Stephen. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Peru Cemetery of St. Stephen.

Mrs. Dingle died Friday, March 23, 2018, at her residence in St. Stephen. She was born January 1, 1923, the daughter of Frank and Rebecca Waring. She was educated in Berkeley County Schools. At an early age, she moved to New York. She was married to Thomas Dingle, Sr. She was a member of the St. Matthew Baptist Church, where she was a member of Senior Choir and the Antioch Baptist Association Choir and a Deaconess. A son, Thomas Dingle, Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors are: four daughters, Eva Green of New York, New York; Brenda Dingle of St. Stephen; Shirley Dingle of Atlanta, Georgia; and Patricia Dingle of Huntsville, Alabama; two sons, Mack Dingle and Robert Dingle, both of New York, New York; one daughter-in-law, Lucy Dingle of Cross; five nieces and two nephews that were like her children, Ruth Lampkin, Irene McCray, Lillie Mae Middleton (god-daughter), Laura Waring, Linda Governor, Moses Shirah and Jessie Dingle; six grandchildren; and three great-grandsons.

Annie Johnson

Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Sue Johnson, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Hermon Gibson, Jr. and Elder Dwayne Brayboy, were held Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery of Kingstree.

Mrs. Johnson died Monday, March 26, 2018, at Carolinas Hospital Systems of Florence. She was born August 6, 1942, the daughter of the late Isaac Johnson and Sarah McClary Johnson.  She was a member of the Original Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.  She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She moved to Rochester, New York and then to Boston, Massachusetts, then she returned to Kingstree. Garden House Residential of Roxbury, Massachusetts employed her. She was married to the late Cephas Shaw. Five siblings, Charlie Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Ike Johnson, Christine J. Brayboy, and Minnie Lee McCrea, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: one brother, Walter Johnson (Rebecca) of Rochester, New York; and one special niece, Harriett Brayboy-Scott of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Eugene Archie, Jr.

Funeral services for Eugene “Klump” Archie, Jr., conducted by the Rev. Jerry Dicks, were held Monday, March 26, 2018, at the Bethel United Methodist Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Fulmore Cemetery of Cades.

Mr. Archie died Wednesday, March 21, 2018. He was born May 8, 1969, in New York, New York, the son of the late Mrs. Justine Fulmore Archie and Eugene Archie, Sr. He was educated in the New York School System. In 2000, he moved to Kingstree. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors are: his fiancée, Amy Moyd of the home; one daughter, Ariana Justine Archie of Kingstree; three sons, Kailon Adams of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Johnathan Duncan of New York, New York; and Adeigeon Eugene Archie of the home; a nephew reared as his own, Lazarus Moyd of the home; his father-in-law, Amos Moyd; and his grandparents, Ocelia “Mary” Fulmore Bell and Albert Bell, Jr. of Miami, Florida.

James Reed, Jr.

Funeral services for James “Uncle Bubba” or “Junior” Reed, Jr., conducted by the Pastor Dorothy Washington, were held Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at the Greater Hines Chapel Apostolic Church of Andrews. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Morning Glory Cemetery, Inc. of Georgetown.

Mr. Reed died Tuesday, March 20, 2018. He was born November 11, 1930, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late James and Annie Bell Reed, Sr. He was educated in the Williamsburg County School System. After completing his education, he worked for 25 years for Lambert Logging of Jamestown. An infant daughter, Irene Reed, five siblings, Hester Reed, Alice Cameron, Connie McClary, Johnny Reed, and Samuel Reed, and one son-in-law, Curtis Davis, preceded him in death.

Survivors are: his wife, Evelyn Bell Reed; nine children, Harry Reed (Mattie), Robert Reed, Cornelius Reed, Tony Reed, and Jimmie Reed (Michelle), all of Rochester, New York; Anniebell Reed-Davis of Andrews; Robert Alford (Sonja) and Sarah Baxter (Elijah) both of Georgetown; and Deloris Holmes (Gregory) of Charlotte, North Carolina; 32 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Frances Lovelace

Frances Matelon Boyd Lovelace, 97, widow of Benjamin Sydnor Lovelace, died Monday, March 12, 2018, in Durham, North Carolina.

Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson, North Carolina.

Mrs. Lovelace was born December 10, 1920, in Lane, the daughter of the late Charles and Matelon Bevis Boyd. She attended Lane Elementary School and graduated from Kingstree High School. She received her B.S. degree from East Carolina College in North Carolina, and taught school in North Carolina for many years. She lived in Crisp, North Carolina. In 1982, she moved to Tarboro, North Carolina. She was a long time member of Eagles Baptist Church in Macclesfield, North Carolina. Four siblings, Charles Winston Boyd (Lillian), Louise B. Cox (Richard), Mamie B. Mishoe (Frank), and Bevis B. Shepard (Ector); and a brother-in-law, J. Marion Sires, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: one daughter, Lyn Edwards (Scott); one son, Benjamin S. Lovelace, Jr.; one sister, JoAnne B. Sires of Kingstree; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Ales Conyers

Ales Moore Conyers, 64, widow of George Conyers, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at her son’s residence in Kingstree.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Kingstree Church of God of Prophecy. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Twin Pines Cemetery near Andrews.

Mrs. Conyers was born May 17, 1953, in Williamsburg County, the daughter of the late Willie and Jessie Micheau Moore. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School and was a Sergeant in the Air Force. She worked for Joe Powell House Movers for 20 years. She was a Charter Member of Kingstree Church of God of Prophecy and was a faithful church member. Four siblings, Heyward “Buck” Moore, Rhett Moore, Maybelle Thomas, and Irene Jolly, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: one son, Trad Conyers (Krissy) of Kingstree; two brothers, Jimmy Moore and Kenneth “BoBo” Moore (Linda Sue), all of Kingstree; two sisters, Hilda Kirby (Donnie) of Lake City; and Mary Tisdale (Grady) of Kingstree; and three grandchildren.

Vishinsky Chatman

Vishinsky “Bubba” Chatman, 68, of Greeleleyville, died Thursday, March 29, 2018, at Carolinas Hospital System of Florence.

A memorial service, conducted by the Rev. David Woods, Jr., was held Friday, April 6, 2018, at the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Salters.

Mr. Chatman was born March 29, 1950, the son of the late Robert Chatman, Sr. and Gennie Mae Washington Chatman. After attending South Carolina State College, he moved to Washington, DC. In 1970, he married Patricia Gardner. In 1989, he united with Rosalind Gamble. During his lifetime, he pursued various career paths. He became a successful alcohol and drug abuse counselor and continued his pursuits and became a great agriculturalist. He was dedicated to his craft as a MASTER welder. He was a consummate cook and even designed and built turkey cookers. He was a staunch advocate for black farmers in Williamsburg County. He was successful in assisting numerous farmers in obtaining the Black Farmer Settlement. Additionally, he served on the Williamsburg County Election Commission, where he impacted politics in this area for many years. He enrolled at Williamsburg Technical College to continue his advanced degree in welding. He was extremely proud to be the oldest student with the highest grades in his classes.

Survivors are: three sons, Joseph Chatman (Melody), Andre’ Chatman (Shakeima), and Anthony McKnight (Cassandra); two daughters, Erika Anderson (Corey) and Courtney V. Chatman; seven siblings, Mercedes, Sandra, Campy, Clara Ann, Robert, Jr., Nora Fay and Quintin; a special niece and sister to his children, Samanta Simone Chatman; a second family that he considered siblings, Harskin Hayes and the Hayes Family; Nealie M. Brewington and the Conyers Family; Travis Chatman and the Chatman Family; Ciceero McCrea and Katherine Chatman; and eight grandchildren.

Ethel McCrea

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Lee McCrea were held Friday, April 6, 2018, at the St. Paul United Methodist Church of Kingstree, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCrea died Monday, April 2, 2018. She was born August 20, 1933, in Williamsburg County, the daughter of the late Jessie and Hester Dukes of Kingstree. She was married to the late Jacob McCrea. One child preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Survivors are: one daughter, Mary Dorsey (Joseph); a host of children raised as her own; three brothers, Theron Dukes (Bertha Lee), Harris Dukes (Mary Lee) and James Dukes (Myra); one sister, Stella Bennett; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Rodney Graham

Funeral services for Rodney “Bum” Wayne Graham, conducted by the Rev. Hazel Epps and the Rev. Curnell Graham, were held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Asbury United Methodist Church of Andrews. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Asbury/Bethlehem Cemetery of Andrews.

Mr. Graham died Friday, March 30, 2018, at his residence. He was born November 6, 1973, in Georgetown, the son of Cynthia Singleton (Freeman)and Charlie Van  Lewis (Diane).  A great portion of his child rearing was indebted to the late Felder and Sarah Graham. He graduated from Kingstree Senior High School Class of 1992. He grew up in Asbury United Methodist Church and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Upon graduating, he began his career as a material handler at Superior Manufacturing Company from 1992-2000. He later moved to Atlanta, Georgia to begin a new career as a fork lift operator at United Distributors where he dedicated 17 years. He also worked 11 years as an inventory clerk at K Source in Atlanta, Georgia.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, are: two children, Joshua Graham and Jeremiah Graham; seven siblings, Cornell Graham, Valencia Sutton (Calvin), Marla Lewis, Karl Lewis (Sharon), Shiquita Murray (Randy), Freeman Singleton (Sherelle) and Traseshon Singleton (Lakia); and the mother of his children, Brandi Brown.

Betty Facen

Funeral services for Betty L. Facen, conducted by the Rev. Joshua Gaskins, were held Friday, April 6, 2018, at the St. Luke United Methodist Church of Salters, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home.

Ms. Facen died Tuesday, March 27, 2018. She was born October 31, 1942, in Salters, the daughter of the late Allen and Pearline Facen. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County.

She was employed by the Department of Social Services in New York City. She attended St. Luke United Methodist Church after returning to South Carolina.

Survivors are: four children, Cindy Sumter of Atlanta, Georgia; Alexander Jenkins of Manhattan, New York; Cecilla Jenkins of Nashville, Tennessee; and Xavier Jenkins of Brooklyn, New York; two brothers, Billy Facen of Salters; and Jimmy Facen of Rochester, New York; one sister, Bessie Woodberry (Wilbert) of Salters; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Gregory Collins

Funeral services for Gregory Earl “Deep” Collins, conducted by Brother Ruby L. Ray, were held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Andrews Church of Christ of Andrews. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Mt. Lebanon AME Church Cemetery of Andrews.

Mr. Collins died Wednesday, March 28, 2018. He was born May 3, 1963, the son of Ernest Collins and the late Christina “Teen” Collins. He received his formal education from Georgetown County School System. He was a member of Andrews Church of Christ. He was employed in the warehouse industrial for over 30 years. 

Survivors, in addition to his father of Andrews, are: his wife, Eleanor Kelly Collins of Winston Salem, North Carolina; two brothers, Jamie Collins (Robin) of Lexington, North Carolina and Curtis Collins (Melanie) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and two sisters, Monica White (Ervin) of Charlotte, North Carolina and Sylvia Futch (Herman) of Orangeburg.

Beatrice McCullough

Funeral services for Mrs. Beatrice Advina “Mother Bea” McCullough, conducted by the Rev. Joshua Gaskins, were held Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the St. Luke United Methodist Church of Salters. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the St. Luke United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery of Salters.

Mrs. McCullough died Friday, March 30, 2018 in Wilmington, North Carolina. She was born March 19, 1929, in Salters, the daughter of the late Alton and Hattie McCrae. She was a lifelong member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. While in Wilmington, she attended St. Phillip AME Church. She was a member of the Gospel Choir and Usher Board.

She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County.  In 1958, she moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. She was married to the late John T. Jennings. She was a civil rights activist. Two sons, James Daniel McCullough and Classie Burnett, and three siblings, Pearline Blake (Louis), Winston McCray (Lula Mae) and Alton McCray, Jr. (Geneva), preceded her in death.

Survivors are: two daughters, Advina Coleman (Walter) and Ethel Shackleford (Timothy); one raised as a daughter, Carolyn Lacewell (William); four sons, Roy Chester “Joe” McCullough, Johnny McCray (Deborah), Robert McCray, and Willie McCray; extended children, Leon Thomas and Keesha Smith; a special niece, Dynetta White; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great grandchildren.

Floral bearers were Inez Roblinson, Janice White, Pearl Cook, Libby Frazier, and Tina McCray.
