C.E. Murray Football Coach Brian Smith was named 1A Lower Coach of the Year for the 2nd time. Smith, who played football at the Citadel, took the job as head coach at C.E. Murray in 2012. In 2015 and his third year as head coach for the War Eagles, Smith’s team finished 12-2 and won the 1A Lower State championship. In that same year he claimed Region 7 Coach of the Year and the Pee Dee Coach of the Year awarded by the Florence Morning News.
Smith would leave the school for one season at Blythewood in 2017, then was hired at Scott’s Branch where he coached in 2018 but he jumped at the opportunity to come home to his Eagles. They are currently undefeated in the region.
“This is a story of redemption and Gods power,” said Smith. “I also owe this award to my players, staff, community members and family.” This summer he took the team to Liberty University, East Carolina University and North Carolina State University. “Its all about exposure and experiencing different environments,” said Smith. “Exposure and better competition.” The War Eagles also are region champs and on December 7, the team will receive the trophy at the SCFCA banquet.
