Cranes

A group or “construction” of Sandhill cranes was captured on a trail camera. The image was taken during the January 8, snowfall in a field in Salters and a representative from Clemson Extension verified the species. Sandhill cranes are the most abundant of the world’s cranes, with a total population of around 650,000. It is unusual to see a Sandhill crane in South Carolina. The bird’s migration range begins in Georgia then northward so it was a pleasant surprise to see these tall graceful birds in Williamsburg County. Photo courtesy Norman Ivey.
