John Michael Collins of Hemingway takes his oath of office on Tuesday, June 18, in Hemingway’s Town Hall. Collins defeated two other opponents to become the town’s first mayor in 20 years. Sabre Poston, Collins’ girlfriend, holds the Bible during his oath of office.

John Michael Collins of Hemingway takes his oath of office on Tuesday, June 18 in Hemingway’s Town Hall. Collins defeated two other opponents to become the town’s first mayor in 20 years. The swearing in was conducted during a called meeting of town council. Hemingway’s next town council meeting, and Collins’ first, is set for July 11.

Collins fills the unexpired term of retired mayor Grady Richardson. As such, his term of service will be up in June 2022.

Newly-elected town councilmembers in Hemingway were sworn in on June 18, in Town Hall. Town Clerk Samantha Lewis gave the oath of office to the new councilmembers. A special election was required following the resignations of two council members earlier this year.

Lewis fills the unexpired term of former Councilmember Doug Joy, and will serve until June 2022. Cox fills the unexpired term of former Council-member John  “Bubba” Coker, and will serve until June 2020.
