Greeleyville native and Image Comics artist Sanford Greene, along with Chuck Brown and David F. Walker, co-writers of Bitter Root, was honored with the Will Eisner Comic Industry “Best Continuing Series” award.Greene has worked professionally in comic illustration and related industries for over 15 years, including work for mainline publishers such as Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image Comics. Several years ago, he visited Greeleyville High School where he brought his profession to light.
In a video, Greene said the book was coming together around the 2016 election. “We were feeling somewhat stifled with what’s been happening and what was happening at that time in our country and we felt we needed to do something different, something unprecedented,” said Greene. “And to see where we came from and where we are now, and truth be told, a lot of things that are happening right now are just a manifestation of what transpired then. To see what we created in that time was something that not only empowered us but hopefully it gained some life and vision to those who witnessed and supported us.”
Bitter Root is a story about a family of monster hunters set during the Harlem Renaissance. The monsters are a metaphor of hatred, racism, oppression and intolerance. A movie is in the works. The Will Eisner Comic Industry awards are voted on by comics industry members and the awards ceremony is held in conjunction with San Diego Comic-Con International every year.
