Two pedestrians were killed by a car on Morrison Drive, according to the Charleston Police Department. 

The police received a report of the accident between Harris and Cooper streets during the morning of April 28, according to a post on the department's X, formerly Twitter, account. The road was closed to traffic until 1 p.m. The scene is near the downtown pedestrian and cyclist entrance to the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. 

The coroner has not yet identified the deceased. No other information about the collision. 

An update is expected on April 29, according to Charleston Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Christopher Stinson. 

South Carolina is the third-most dangerous state for pedestrians, according to a new study based on information from data.gov. In the Palmetto State, there are 29.70 deaths per 100,000 people, according to the report. And Charleston has been ranked as the fifth-most dangerous city for pedestrians in the country.

More than 7,500 pedestrians are estimated to have been killed nationwide in car crashes in 2022, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, the highest in more than 40 years. A total of 171 of those deaths took place in South Carolina, according to data from the state Department of Public Safety.
