Local surgeon Dr. Michelle Butterworth has published a textbook on pediatric foot and ankle deformities. Dr. Butterworth is foot and ankle doctor/surgeon at Williamsburg Regional Hospital. She has lived in Kingstree over 20 years and is employed by Williamsburg Regional Hospital, where she is also Chief of the Medical Staff for her fifth and final term.
Dr. Butterworth treats all conditions of the foot and ankle, but specializes in pediatric deformities and conditions. Patients from the entire east coast seek her services. Dr. Butterworth said the book is comprehensive and covers everything from normal exam and radio-graphic findings, most of the deformities and pathologies that can occur in the pediatric population, neurological abnormalities, sports medicine, as well as trauma and fracture repair has taken several years to come to fruition. “I am very excited about this publication and hope it will truly benefit foot and ankle physicians and surgeons, and that it guides them in the diagnosis and management of many pediatric conditions,” she said. “Of course there were many people involved with the final product including my incredible co-author Dr. J.T. Marcoux and my many authors that brought their expertise further in their areas of specialty.”
Dr. Butterworth is a Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, a national organization with over 7,000 members. She remains active in the college lecturing, reviewing Journal articles, and is currently a member of the Professional Relations Committee. She is newly elected to the Board of Directors for the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. She has also served on their Cognitive Exam Committee, Communications Committee, Online Study Guide Committee, and Bylaws task force. She is also currently a member of the Credentials Committee where she review surgical cases for physicians seeking board certification in foot and ankle surgery.
She is a Past President of the South Carolina Podiatric Medical Association and is the Chairman of the SC annual conference and a member of the Legislative and Education Committees. Dr. Butterworth lectures nationally teaching students, residents, and other physicians. She has authored numerous manuscripts and textbook chapters. She is the co-editor of a textbook on pediatric foot and ankle surgery that has just been published. She is also an editor for The McGlamry Textbook of Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Surgery with an anticipated publication next year. She is a member of the Podiatry Institute, currently residing as Vice Chairman, a member of the PICA Claims Committee where she reviews medical malpractice cases, and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Foot and Ankle Osteosynthesis.
Dr. Butterworth is active in her community where she is the Chairman of Kingstree Kids, a non-profit organization she started in 2011. The organization sponsors an annual toy drive for foster children and assists children in need throughout the year. She is also the coach for the cross-country team at Williamsburg Academy, where she started the program five years ago. Dr. Butterworth is involved politically as well and is the Councilwoman for the Town of Kingstree, District 2.
