Brad Solomon’s family has returned to the United States following nearly two weeks of a dogged — but so far unsuccessful — search for the Charleston man, who wandered off in a market in Cozumel, Mexico, and has been missing ever since.

Savannah Miller, Solomon’s 29-year-old daughter, posted on Facebook that the family is back home “recovering,” updating scores of people closely following Solomon’s case on social media.

Post and Courier reporter Eva Herscowitz discusses the case of Brad Solomon, a Charleston man who went missing in Cozumel while on a cruise in Mexico.

“Thank you to everyone in the US and in Cozumel and all over the world for everything you have done to support our family these past weeks,” Miller wrote in the April 15 post. “There are no words to use that can properly express our gratitude or our grief.”

Solomon hasn’t been seen since April 3 when the 66-year-old West Ashley native got separated from his wife in Cozumel, an island off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. The couple was passing through the area as part of a seven-day cruise — the last big vacation for Mimi Hyer Solomon and her husband, who was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2022.

A massive outpouring of support has surrounded Solomon’s family throughout the ordeal. His daughter, sister-in-law and cousin have posted near daily updates on Facebook, with news progressively thinning as the search dragged on. There were posts about renting ATVs to scour the jungle, images of the grid pattern search teams traversed and odes to Solomon — a husband, father, surfer and friend.

But as the days since April 3 accumulated, his family decided to depart Cozumel.

“We have so been hoping and wanting to find Brad alive,” Solomon’s cousin Martha Warren wrote on Facebook. “But now we must face the nearly insurmountable evidence to the contrary.”

Warren noted April 14 that a search continues, though the focus has shifted from rescue to recovery. As volunteers and officials continue to scour the island for Solomon, a sea now separates the man from friends and family.
