Williamsburg County Economic Development Board Executive Director Gilleon Frieson announced his resignation on December 29. He has accepted a job with the South Carolina Department of Commerce as the Community and Rural Development Manager.

“This is bittersweet for us,” says County Supervisor Kelvin Washington. “He got a spectacular job offer, and this is a great opportunity for him. We thank him for all the great work he has done for Williamsburg County and are very excited for him and his family.”

Frieson began working with Williamsburg County on August 15, 2019. In September of 2023 his role was expanded to include Executive Director of Operations where he was tasked with improving the operational effectiveness and efficiency of any department that was underperforming or needing help with strategic management.

Prior to arriving in Williamsburg County, Frieson worked in higher education as an administrator at Virginia College, and worked part-time as a Lake City municipal judge. He is also a real estate agent.

“This will give me the opportunity to work with rural communities all over the State. I want to be able to be an advocate and ally for rural economic development in South Carolina and help spotlight the innovative spirit that has always existed in rural America,” he said in a statement to The News. In his new capacity, he will still be a valuable resource to Williamsburg County. Frieson’s last day is January 12.
