Two Kingstree High School Students selected for Palmetto Girls State. Tehmeya McElveen and Imani Boggon (Alternate) were selected for Palmetto Girls State for the summer of 2024. Tehmeya and Imani are rising seniors at Kingstree High School and are honored to be selected because American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Palmetto Girls State is an honor and a privilege. The girls attending ALA Palmetto Girls State (referred to as “delegates”) must be selected to attend the program and sponsored by an ALA Unit in South Carolina. Palmetto Girls State is a summer program for female students who will be entering their senior year next year. This year’s program will be held on the campus of Presbyterian College from June 9-15. The program is designed to introduce students to government and citizenship as they participate in mock activities at the municipal, county, and state government levels.

Through the selection process, delegates have demonstrated the qualities of leadership. ALA Palmetto Girls State provides an opportunity of “learning through doing.” Delegates have the opportunity to learn about leadership and government as they are tasked with creating the mythical state of “Palmetto.”

ALA Palmetto Girls State is filled with young women from across South Carolina who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their schools and communities. Delegates will join an organization that has existed in South Carolina for more than 70 years. The alumnae of ALA Palmetto Girls State is an elite group of women who have become business leaders, legislators and political leaders, civic leaders, and professionals (such as educators, doctors, lawyers, and accountants). The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the program and makes the determination of which students serve as delegates.
