Traffic Safety Checkpoints - The Lane, Greeleyville, and Kingstree Police Departments will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints during the month of July.

Seniors Patrol - The Kingstree Police Depart-ment is offering a seniors patrol wellness check. Any elderly, ill or bedridden residents of the Town of Kingstree who would like for the police department to contact them on a regular basis should call Chief Robert Ford. Chief Ford can be reached at 355-5435 or come by the police department and leave your name, phone number, and address.

 

Memory Dish - Hospice Care of South Caro-lina's Grief Support Group, known as the "Memory Dish" is held the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Williamsburg Technical Col-lege (Administrative Office Building Conference Room). The Memory Dish is conducted by Chaplain Willis Broughton. The contact number for this group is (843) 213-8507.

 

Program - Taking Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) Weight Program will meet on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. at Ina Miles Store. For more information contact Lillie Jean at (843) 355-3002 or Ann at (843) 382-9696.

 

Senior Bingo - The senior citizens of Lane invite any senior citizen to join them every first and third Tuesday at Lane Recreation Center on Broomstraw Rd. for “Senior Bingo.”

 

Weight Watchers - Weight Watchers 2012 meetings will be held at the First Baptist Church of Kingstree. Classes are on Thursdays at 5 p.m.

 

Screenings - Williamsburg County School District Office of Special Ser-vices, located at 500 North Academy Street, Kingstree, (843) 355-5533, will hold child find screenings each month.

 

Summer Camp -  The Celebrate Freedom Foundation is pleased to announce it is accepting student applications to its SOaR Aviation Aerospace Summer Camp.  The camp is open to all sophomore and junior high school students in the state of South Carolina.

The camp will be held at the University of South Carolina on July 15 to July 20,  free of charge.  Only 50 applicants will be accepted. More information can be found at www.thecelebratefreedomfoundation.org.

 

Applications - Mary’s Little Lamb Learning Center will be accepting applications for state-funded (free) 4K program for 2012-2013 Academic School Year. For more information call (843) 382-3417.

 

Meeting - The Housing Authority of Kingstree will meet every third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. at 1022 Lexington Ave., Kingstree.

 

Support Group - The  Alzheimer’s Associa-tion Caregiver Support Group will meet the third Friday of each month from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Williamsburg County Library, Main Library’s Meeting Room in Kingstree. Participants may park in the library parking lot. Contact person for this group is Nancy Adams (843)-822-5133. The support group is free and open to the public.  All family members and friends are invited to attend.

 

Registration - Little Smurf Too Child Development and School-Age is in Williamsburg County, located at 1435 N. Longstreet St., Kingstree. The 4K (pre-kindergarten) program is a free program offered through South Carolina First Steps with free transportation. The program will be held from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., starting August 20. Bingo - Hey Williamsburg County, Bingo is here!! Where? At the J. Miller Family Entertainment Center located at 2919 Hwy. 521 (Old B.J.Gordon Building). Grand opening is Thursday, July 12, at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Salters and Lane Community Action, Inc.  sponsors the event to benefit the academically underprivileged children and emergency assistance.

 

Art Collection - “The African American Art Collection of Cassandra Williams Rush” will be displayed from June 5 to July 31, at C. Williams Rush Gallery Of African-American Arts & Culture, 200 Hampton Avenue, Kingstree. Artwork previously exhibited at Francis Marion University and other works of art by notable artists will be  featured Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Please call for group and other appointment times, (803) 397-1859. School groups are encouraged to attend all of the educational exhibits, $5 per person with children under six years, $1.

Honor Flight - World War II veterans wanted to participate in the next Honor Flight to Washington, DC for a one-day trip, which will include a tour of many of the War Memorials. The day will end with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, then fly home. There is no cost to you, it’s free. Down at the River - A Summer Celebration… Down at the River is being sponsored by the Town of Kingstree, Williamsburg Tourism Board, and the Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber on Thursday, July 12, from 6:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. The family friendly event held at Gilland Park in Kingstree will feature The Men of Distinction Band from Columbia playing your favorite songs.  A food vendor will be available to provide food.  Admission cost is $5 for adults. Admission is free for any youth ages 1-18 accompanied by an adult. The community is invited to bring a blanket or a chair and enjoy an evening on the river with friends and family.  Coolers are welcome.  No glass please. Meeting - Vital Aging of Williamsburg Co., Inc. will hold its monthly Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, July 18, at 3:30 p.m.  The meeting will be held at the Kingstree Wellness Centerat 912 4th Avenue, Kingstree.  Please call (843) 354-5496 with any questions.

 

Poetry Contest - A $1,000 grand prize is being offered to the last poet standing in a free contest sponsored by the Celestial Arts Society. There are 50 prizes totaling $5,000.

Poems of 21 lines or fewer on any subject and in any style will be judged by the contest director Dr. James Cameron. Entries must be received by July 31, and may be submitted by mail to Free Poetry Contest, PO Box 761, Medford, Oregon 97501 or enter online at www.freecontest.com. Those sending entries should include their name and address on the same page as the poem. A winners’ list will be sent to all entrants.

 

Meeting - The Williamsburg Section of The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW)will be meeting Friday, July 13, at 5 p.m. at the Williamsburg County

Recreation on Thurgood Marshall Blvd in Kingstree. New members are

welcome.
