Local attorneys appointed

Area attorneys, Joe Ann Calvy and Ernest Jarrett, have been appointed as South Carolina Bar Section Council Members. Joe Ann Calvy, Esquire, was appointed general councilwoman with the South Carolina Bar Workers’ Compensation Section. As a councilwoman Calvy's duties include developing an ongoing relationship with the Workers' Compensation Commission; exploring the feasibility of publishing Workers' Compensation hearing orders and appellate orders; and developing an ongoing relationship with the Workers' Compensation Educational Conference. Other projects include sponsoring a full day seminar on medical issues as relate to claims before the commission; publishing summaries of significant case law and procedural changes; and reviewing a proposal to include Workers' Compensation commissioners in the annual Judicial Evaluation Survey.

Calvy has been practicing law for over 12 years and Workers’ Compensation cases accounts for about 50 percent of her business. "I love working with and helping the injured worker who is sometimes injured and needs a lawyer to help him get the employer to provide him with the medical attention he needs or one who is injured and his doctor has told him he cannot work and needs the employer to pay him workers’ compensation benefits until he can return to work or one who does not have transportation and needs his employer to either provide someone to take him to his doctor or pay him for his mileage traveling to his doctor appointments and to ultimately help him get a settlement to compensate him for his injuries," said Calvy.

She graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1997. She was admitted to practice law in the South Carolina state courts in 1998, admitted to practice law in the S C Supreme Court in 1998 and admitted to practice law in the U S District Court in 1999. She is a member of the South Carolina Black Lawyers' Association, South Carolina Women in Law, The South Carolina Association for Justice, The Injured Workers' Advocates Association, The American Bar Association, and The National Bar Association. Calvy has practiced solo in her own firm since 1999. She has dedicated her practice to serving people in her practice, community, church and family. Attorney Calvy's office is located at 209 W. Ernest Jarrett, Esquire, managing partner of Jenkinson, Jarrett & Kellahan, P.A., has been appointed as a 2012-13 council member of the Family Law Section of the South Carolina Bar. Jarrett was nominated by his peers on the Family Law Council and began his second three-year term on July 1. As a member, Jarrett will assist the section in promoting the goals and objectives of the South Carolina Bar in the field of Family Law. Objectives include stimulating research and development, seeking uniformity in legislation and administration, and improving the application of justice in this field of law.

Jarrett received a B.A. from Wofford College (English/government) in 1989 and a J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1992 where he was chief justice of the Moot Court. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1992 and the US District Court in 1993: District of South Carolina. He has been appointed by the Supreme Court of South Carolina as an Attorney to Assist the Office of Disciplinary Counsel. He is also an active member of the South Carolina Association of Justice and both the Williamsburg and Georgetown County Bar Associations. He received a Pro Bono Service Award from the South Carolina Bar in 2000.

Jarrett has served as President of Kingstree Rotary and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He is also the chairperson of the Governing Board of Williamsburg Academy. He serves on the Executive Committee of the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). He is a member of RALI (Rural Area Leadership Institute at Francis Marion University) – Williamsburg, Williamsburg County First Steps Board, Williamsburg County Voter Registration Board and Tri-County Regional Development Corporation Board. He formally served as president of Williamsburg County Habitat for Humanity, Inc.
