VAN SCOTT - KINGSTREE

Funeral services for Van Wright Scott, conducted by the Rev. James Lane and Bishop Dr. Linwood Cooper, were held Thursday, February 25, 2010, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at the Original Mount Olive Baptist Church in Kingstree. Mr. Scott died Thursday, February 18, 2010. He was born March 7, 1924, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Raeford and Sulie Mitchum Scott. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, where he was Chairman and a member of the Deacon Board for over 50 years. He was Superintendent of the Sunday School, a member of the Trustee Board, Treasurer and he also served as the Sunday school teacher. He received his diploma from St. Mark High School. He attended Williamsburg County Man Power training school and received certificates and was later certified in the following trades: carpentry, plumbing and electricity. He also served as a tutor in the Williamsburg County Illiteracy Program.
He was married to the late Isabell Chandler Scott. One son preceded him in death, Van Wright Scott, Jr. He was a charter member of the Pride of Rose Hill Mason Lodge #405 of Kingstree. He was a member of the area school board, served on the Federal Credit Union of Kingstree; served as the first president of St. Mark PTA, served as one of the first presidents of the NAACP branch in Kingstree, was a member of the Williamsburg County Tax Appeal Board for nearly 29 years, was a former member of the Esther Chapter of the Eastern Star of Kingstree, served as poll manger for voter registration for Williamsburg County, was organizer for the Williamsburg County United Farmer’s organization, organized and served as the president of the Williamsburg County Hotline and was Constable for the Magistrate Court for Kingstree. Survivors are: three children, David Bernard Scott (Anne) of Rochester, New York; Christine Davenport of Glen Burnie, Maryland; and Vastine Graham (Pastor Benjamin) of Kingstree; two sisters, Lillie Mae Wright (Norwood) of Kingstree; and Margie Word (John) of Washington, DC; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
