Traffic Safety Checkpoints     
The Lane Police Department will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints during the month of October.

Seniors patrol wellness check
The Kingstree Police Department is offering a seniors patrol wellness check. Any elderly, ill or bedridden resident of the Town of Kingstree who would like for the police department to contact them on a regular basis should call Chief Robert Ford. Chief Ford can be reached at 355-5435 or come by the police department and leave your name, phone number and address.

Weight Watchers to hold meeting
There will be a Weight Watchers meeting on October 22, at 5 p.m. at Waccamaw Mental Health, 314 E. Main St., Kingstree.

Registration for classes
The Occupational Outlook Center is now accepting registration for the following classes: phlebotomy certificate, medical office assistant, certified nurse assistant, EKG (cardiac technician) and patient care technician/assistant. King’s Tree Trials planned
The 14th running of the King’s Tree Trials is planned for Saturday, November 7, at the McCutchen Training Center in Kingstree. Post time is 12 noon. Tickets go on sale October 13, at 8 a.m. at the Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber. Call 843-355-6431 for more information.

Friends of Library book sales
The Friends of the Library will sponsor a book sale on the first Saturday in each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The book sale will be held at the white house on Church Street, Kingstree, beside the library.

Job Fair to be held
The Federal Correctional Institution, Williamsburg, South Carolina is hosting a job fair for the general public on October 28, at the institution’s Staff Training Center located at 8301 Highway 521, Salters. DSN Board to hold meeting
Williamsburg County DSN Board will be having their monthly board meeting on Wednesday, October 21, at 4 p.m. at Williamsburg County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, 61 Greenlee Street, Kingstree.

VITA seeks volunteers
Volunteers, trained and tested by the IRS, will prepare basic tax returns for individuals needing free help under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

Library happenings
There will be a Cyberbullying and Internet Safety Program at the Williamsburg County Library – Kingstree on Thursday, October 22, at 6 p.m. in the meeting room. Come on out to the Halloween Family Night at the Williamsburg County Library – Hemingway on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:30 p.m. There will be a Halloween costume contest, music, craft, reading, and refreshments. Come on out to the Halloween Family Night at the Williamsburg County Library – Kingstree on Thursday, October 29, at 6:15 p.m. There will be a Halloween costume contest, music, craft, reading, and refreshments. Due to large crowds from previous years there will be no admittance after 6:30 p.m.

Workshop to be held
In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Pee Dee Coalition announces a special Dating Violence Workshop on October 22, 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Williamsburg County Recreation Department, 2084 Thurgood Marshall Hwy., Kingstree For more information about this event, call Freda Cox at 345-6481.

Teen Read Week at the library
Read Beyond Reality @ your library from October 19-23. Kingstree Senior High students and teachers are invited to stop by the library during Teen Read Week to read beyond reality! Check out a sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or nonfiction book that will transport you to a new world. Come in today and pick up a page-turner that you can read or listen to, just for the fun of it!  Try your skill at the essay, drawing, puzzle, and/or cooking contests.  Join the school-wide read-in or have your class get caught reading.  Turn in an overdue library book with no penalty or read a book that is out of this world.  Prizes will be awarded.  For more information, contact Mrs. Beth McGee, the media specialist at Kingstree Senior High School.

Strings offered in Kingstree
Williamsburg County School District Strings Program will begin classes on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Students interested in participating in the Strings Program are encouraged to attend. Classes will be held each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the Show Choir Room at Kingstree Junior High School.  Classes are free of charge, but participants will be responsible for transportation, and the cost of their instruments. Mrs. Chaste’y Rayford-Gibson, Strings Instructor, will train students to play the violin, viola, cello, and string bass. For additional information, please contact Mrs. Jennifer Holliday, Director of Fine Arts, at 843-355-6823.

Williamsburg County School District Strings Program will offer classes on Wednesdays at Hemingway Elementary School and Hemingway High School during school hours. Classes are free of charge, but participants are responsible for the cost of their instruments. Mrs. Chaste’y Rayford-Gibson, Strings Instructor, will train students to play the violin, viola, cello, and string bass.  Students interested in participating in the Springs Program may obtain an application form from their school’s main office, or by contacting Mrs. Jennifer Holliday, Director of Fine Arts, at 843-355-6823. Students are asked to return signed forms by Friday, October 23, 2009.

First Steps training cancelled
Williamsburg County First Steps has cancelled their Child Care Training that was scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2009 due to conflicting events. This training has been rescheduled for Saturday, December 12, 2009. If you have any questions and/or concerns, please feel free to contact the First Steps Office.

VFW to hold meeting
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 6500, located at 2317 Sandy Bay Rd., Kingstree, will host its monthly meal and meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 5.
