The Lane, Greeleyville, and Kingstree Police Departments will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints during the month of January.

Friends of Library book sales
The Friends of the Library will sponsor a book sale on the first Saturday in each month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The book sale will be held at the white house on Church Street, Kingstree, beside the library.

Seniors patrol wellness check
The Kingstree Police Department is offering a seniors patrol wellness check. Any elderly, ill or bedridden resident of the Town of Kingstree who would like for the police department to contact them on a regular basis should call Chief Robert Ford. Chief Ford can be reached at 355-5435 or come by the police department and leave your name, phone number and address.

Senior Bingo in Lane
The senior citizens in Lane invite any senior citizen to join them each first and third Tuesday at Lane Recreation Center on Broomstraw Rd. for “Senior Bingo,” where they do crafting, have Bible trivia, sing, share, fellowship and play Bingo.

Weight Watchers begins new class
Weight Watchers 2010 meeting will be held at Waccamaw Center for Mental Health, 314 E. Main St., Kingstree. Class starts January 14, at 5 p.m.

Tideland’s Hospice meetings
Tidelands Community Hospice, Inc. holds a regular grief support group once a month in its Kingstree office. The group meets on the third Monday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m.  The hospice office is located at 205 Martin Luther King Blvd., Kingstree (by the Bank of Greeleyville).

Mardi Gras Madness
Williamsburg Regional Hospital Foundation is sponsoring a $5,000 cash drawing The drawing will take place during Mardi Gras Madness on Saturday, February 20. For more information about tickets please call 843-426-2508 or email wrhfoundation@wmbgrh.com

Teachings From The Ark
Teachings From The Ark will have the following events for the month of January.
January  23 and 30, teachings: January 16, movie, admission is $2 with refreshments.
All the above events start at 12 p.m. with dining afterwards except for January 16.
Teachings from The Ark’s Food Pantry will be open to the public, Saturday, January 16, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at 101 E. Main St., Kingstree. All recipients are required to show a current valid photo ID card in order to receive commodities.

Courses to be offered
The Occupational Outlook Center is now accepting registration for the following new year courses to begin the second week in January. Phlebotomy certificate – this 10 weeks course is designed to provide students with a review of the theory and skills required in proper collection of blood specimens from patients. Medical office assistant – this six weeks course allow students to acquire vital skills and demonstrate competence in a variety of medical office administration and clinical skills necessary for employment in the medical office setting. Certified nurse assistant – in this nine weeks course, students will prepare for the written and skills state examination. Course includes   40 hours of classroom instruction along with 40 hours of clinical externship. EKG (cardiac technician) – this nine weeks course is designed to provide students with the skills on monitoring patients’ blood pressure and heart rate using electrocardiogram (EKG) equipment during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Mental health to hold meeting
The regular meeting of The Waccamaw Center for Mental Health Governing Board is scheduled for Tuesday, January 19, at 7 p.m. at the Waccamaw Center for Mental Health, 501 Nelson Blvd., Kingstree. For information please call Mrs. Gawith at (843) 347-5060, extension 226.

Valentine class to be held at library
The Williamsburg County Library will hold a Family Night class on how to make valentine cards on Monday, January 11, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

VITA program offered
The VITA Program offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income (approximately $49,000) taxpayers who cannot prepare their own tax returns. This includes both the preparation of the returns plus e-filing of both the federal and state income tax returns. Williams-burg County will be offering this program at the Williamsburg County Library, 214 Jackson St., Kingstree, Saturdays, starting on January 16, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This program will end on April 10.

Vital Aging to hold meeting
Vital Aging of Williamsburg County, Inc. will hold its regular monthly Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday January 20, at 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Kingstree Wellness Center at 912 4th Avenue, Kingstree. Please call (843) 354-5496 if you have any questions.

DSN board to hold meeting
Williamsburg County DSN Board will be having its monthly board meeting on Wednesday, January 20, at 4 p.m. at Williamsburg County Disabilities and Special Needs Board, 61 Greenlee Street, Kingstree.

King tribute to be held
The Georgetown Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will be hosting its annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday, January 16, 7 p.m. at the Glisson Center, Bethel AME Church, Georgetown. Tickets can be obtained from the Law Office of Morant and Morant, Georgetown or any member of the Georgetown Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
