Single break-in unveils host of burglaries

11/16/2009

Kingstree police and Williamsburg County Sheriff’s deputies are in the midst of unraveling a web of burglaries that involve two teenage boys. Christopher Kelly Shirer, age 18 of Kingstree, and Timothy James McCutcheon, age 17 of Cades, were arrested on August 11, and charged with burglary in the second degree, among other charges, in connection to break-ins that span both city and county jurisdictions.
The event that led to the suspects’ arrests and subsequent charges was set in motion when police were summoned to investigate a November 11, break-in at Williamsburg Academy school on Sandy Bay Road in Kingstree. Aided by school security tapes, physical evidence retrieved at the scene and informants’ statements, police were able to track down Shirer and McCutcheon.
Once in custody, both boys admitted to several other burglaries that date back to October and include homes, vehicles and a hunting lodge, where weapons, ammunition and other items were removed. Search warrants produced items confiscated from Shirer’s home, as well as a location in Clarendon County, where a cache of weapons and ammunition was stored.
The suspects are currently being housed at the Williamsburg County Detention Center, where they await a bond hearing. Burglary in the Second Degree carries a 15-year prison term.
The sheriff’s office is currently investigating six related incidents. While the KPD continues its investigation they stated that two guns are still at large. The department asks that anyone who knows the location of a Remington Bolt Action 270 with a Bushnell scope and a Charles Daly 12 gauge Automatic please call the department at 843-355-5435, no questions asked.
