[/if ImageKingstree] The brains behind the online magazine SCIway.net recently paid Kingstree a visit. Instead of driving to Kingstree, Robin Welch, Kerrie Fitts, Cedric Baele and Kate Wright rode the train from James Island where their main office is located. This is nothing new to the foursome. Each month they make a road trip to an undiscovered county for site seeing and information gathering.

With camera and legal pad in hand the group stops at businesses to chat with the locals. Then it’s off on a fact-finding mission to the Williamsburgh Historical Society and the Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber. Chamber Director Leslee Spivey welcomed the young people by preparing a homemade lunch of chicken noodle soup and desert. After lunch the foursome headed to The News for a brief meeting then it was back to the Society for a discussion with Gretchen Huggins, the great niece of Mary Richardson Brigg who transcribed the famous Richardson Waltz 200 years ago.

Once their mission was complete, the team will take up to two months to compile the data and create a web page that visitors can access. SCIway, pronounced “sky-way,” is an acronym for South Carolina Information Highway. It is the largest and most comprehensive directory of South Carolina information on the Internet. The site has been in operation for 12 years and was originally created at The Citadel as a learning and public service project.

Most of the 6.5 million people who visit SCIway each year either live in South Carolina or want to move here or vacation here.

Visitors are only a click away from accessing a myriad of information.  Everything from state symbols, detailed maps, hotel guides, and even the 1800+ plantations scattered about the state can be found at SCIway. The site has a link where photographers can download their local scenes for viewing by visitors and a link for information on SC High School reunions.

The group that toured Kingstree will work together to create a page of comprehensive information featuring Will-iamsburg County and all of its positive attributes. To visit the site, go to www.sciway.net or call SCIway at (843) 795-3951.

  1. Fed up says:

Gosh darn, if only the Pasley megadump was opened-they could take a tour of it too. Pretty ironic that the front page has a picutre of citizens protesting the megadump in front of the court house and under that is a glamour shot of Lou Eaterling shooting a promo for the county! Then we have Les Spivey whining that there is a soda bottle in the ditch while we've got trash mountain coming. Where's Uncle Charlie when we need him? I wish he would sink what teeth he has left in this story!
