Funeral services for Rosa Lee Nelson Conner, conducted by the Rev. Jack C. Washington, were held Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery of Greeleyville. Ms. Conner, 83, died Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at Carolinas Hospital Systems of Florence. She was born December 31, 1928, a daughter of the late Solomon and Alma Gordon Nelson. Three siblings, Mrs. Evelyn Lott, Mrs. Sweder Lewis, and Carol Nelson, preceded her in death. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated as the valedictorian of her class. Upon completing her secondary school education, she attended Morris College of Sumter, where she received a BS degree. Continuing her education, she earned a Master’s degree from South Carolina State University. She was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where she served as president of the United Methodist Women’s Association and was a member of several other church organizations. A lifelong educator, she taught in Horry County, Williamsburg County and Florence County School District No. 3 school systems. After 35 years in the educational system, she retired. She served as Basileus for her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. of which she was a life member. She was also a life member of the National Council of Negro Women, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Williamsburg County Retired Teachers Association. Survivors are: one daughter, Priscilla Conner Holloway of Kingstree; a niece, reared as her daughter, Patricia Nelson Smith of Kingstree; three granddaughters; three great-grandsons; and two great-great-grandchildren.
