Ministering to “Little Mexico”

6/22/2009 By Michaele Duke, Staff Reporter

Most of us are familiar with Mexico. It’s considered a place of fun and sun, colorful characters and hidden treasures. But to make the trip to this Mexico, one need not make a reservation. It’s as close as the nearest grocery store.

Little Mexico, as its been nicknamed, is nestled under the canopy of an oak tree that strides the railroad track near Main Street in Kingstree.  It’s a place where several locals congregate, beginning as early as 6:00 a.m., rain or shine. Mexico has been around for a long time. So long that Mayor Ricky Burrows can’t remember in his 50+ years as a resident when it wasn’t there.

But to recently appointed Town Manager Dan Wells, Mexico is a place that tugs at his heart. Since his introduction Wells has learned of the challenges and opportunities associated with life inside the city limits. So in an effort to serve the community better he is reaching out to the church community for suggestions on how to serve the people of Mexico.

The folks who spend time hanging out at the open-air haunt aren’t known to cause any major trouble, however the assemblage has always harbored realistic concerns for locals. Wells has envisioned a Mexico Ministry program and to see it come to fruition, he mailed letters of intent to many area churches. The objective is simple. One day a week a minister would pay a visit to Mexico and deliver a brief but spiritually enriched message of love and hope.

At the first meeting on Wednesday, June 3, pastors David Ruth of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church and Walter McClam of the Kingstree Church of God met  with Wells, Mayor Burrows and Kingstree Police Chief Robert Ford to discuss the details. Wells admitted he lacks the knowledge or gift that pastors possess to make the kind of impression that could lead to transformed lives but added he recognizes the need for reaching out to those who may be less fortunate and the church would be the catalyst to make it happen.

Many ideas were brought to the table but all agreed it will take a compassionate effort and as it was clearly stated in Wells’ letter to the churches: “What I hope for is that we do as the Lord did, reach out and let them hear the message of God’s love.” A meeting has been arranged for July 2, at 9:30 a.m. at town hall. Pastors who are interested in participating in this mission may contact the town manager at 355-7484.
