A graveside funeral service for Mary Alma Hodges Crosland was held Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at St. Stephen Episcopal Churchyard in St. Stephen. Mrs. Crosland was born February 8, 1932, in Kingstree, the daughter of William Henry and Celeste Patterson Hodges. She graduated from Kingstree High School in 1948 and she attended St. Mary’s Junior College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She later transferred to the University of South Carolina, where she was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority and graduated in 1952. She taught children with special needs for the Charleston County School District and obtained a master’s degree in education from The Citadel. She was also a licensed independent tour guide for the City of Charleston. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Garden Club, Charleston County Democratic Women’s Club and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. She was a volunteer for Historic Charleston Foundation, The Preservation Society, Spoleto and other art and cultural organizations. She was married to Malcolm McLaurin Crosland of Charleston in 1955 and lived in Texas and West Germany during his military service. Survivors are: one daughter, Lorraine M. Crosland; one son, Malcolm M. Crosland, Jr. (Meggett); and one grandson.
