[/if ImageKingstree] County council members Andy McKnight, Franklin Fulmore, W.B. Wilson and Harry “Bobo” Huggins called a special meeting on Monday, January 26. Immediately following the invocation, council members entered into executive session to discuss legal and contractual matters regarding the proposed Nesmith mega dump.

In attendance were Senator Yancey McGill, District 103 House Representative Carl Anderson and representatives of MRR, the firm under contract with the county.

During the session Rep. Anderson exited the meeting to talk with the press. Anderson explained he attended the meeting because he had received an extremely high number of calls requesting he be there.

Anderson, who has objected to the construction of a landfill in the county, said he had to respect his constituents’ wishes. “The people have spoken,” he said. “They do not want a dump site in the Nesmith area and I am in support of that.” He added that a mega-dump in truth, is not a moneymaking event and one needs only to read the fine print of the contract.

Anderson also stated that there are many entities that are fully aware of the mega-dump situation and are in full support of the population opposed to its construction. “We had a meeting in Georgetown today with several departments and several of them said they have heard the cry of the people,” he said.

“The bottom line is going to be that Nesmith is not going to get a dumpsite.” Council later reconvened into open session with no action taken.
