Funeral services for Mrs. Lillie Mae Lawrence Williams, conducted by the Rev. Samuel L. Davis, were held Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at St. Mary AME Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at St. Mary AME Church Cemetery. Mrs. Williams died Friday, December 25, 2009. She was born April 20, 1910, a daughter of the late Robert Lawrence and Addie Felder Lawrence. She was a member of St. Mary AME Church, where she served as an honor stewardess. She received her early education in Georgetown County. Her high school certificate was obtained from Tomlinson High School in Kingstree. She received her B.S. degree from Allen University and the master’s of arts from South Carolina State University. She began her career as an elementary teacher in Salters. She later transferred to Blakely High School as guidance counselor, where she guided students for over 30 years. Her civic and community contributions included: secretary of Williamsburg County Teachers Association, an officer of the Palmetto State Teachers Association, a member of the NAACP, and the Eastern Star. Her special honors included: special award and a testimonial tribute from Blakely High School and the community. She was married to Carnel Williams. Survivors are: four children, Mrs. Carnellae C. Davis of Silver Springs, Maryland; Thomas J. Williams of Atlanta, Georgia; Robert J. Williams of San Antonio, Texas; and Edward J. Williams of Kingstree; one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Johnson of Carrollton, Georgia; three foster sons, the Rev. Roosevelt M. McFadden of Kingstree; Marion Salters of Salters; and Isaiah Covert of Lane; five foster daughters, Neomia Covert of Lane, Gertrude Salters and Stella Dozier of Salters; Mary Lampton of Morningside, Maryland; and Emma Burgess of Greeleyville; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
