Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Major, conducted by the Rev. Leonard O. Griffin, were held Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Morris Street Baptist Church in Charleston. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Morris Street Baptist Church Cemetery in Charleston. Mrs. Major died Friday, February 19, 2010, at her home. She was born January 5, 1917, in Darlington, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Pearse. She was married to the late Irvin Major. She was a member of Morris Street Baptist Church, where she served on the Missionary Board, Sunday school, Pastor’s Aide, Women Auxiliaries, and the Tea Committee. She was also recognized as Woman of the Year. She worked as a steam presser and nurse’s aide for many years. She was president of the Lesdamesgais Social Club for more than 50 years. Survivors are: a niece, Louise Chandler of Greeleyville; her children, Leah Campbell (Dexter) of Hampton, Georgia; and Lauren Chandler (Tanisha) of Conyers, Georgia; a goddaughter, Rosalind Jones of Charleston; and a godson, Irvin Fordham of Atlanta, Georgia.
