Funeral services for James Gamble, conducted by the Rev. Joseph D. Ricks, were held Thursday, July 2, 2009, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richard-son Funeral Home, followed at Porter-Ferrell Cemetery in Salters. Mr. Gamble, 84, died Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Kingstree Nursing Facility in Kingstree. He was born October 6, 1924, in Salters, a son of the late John and Mable Robinson Gamble. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. He was married to the late Mrs. Mellie Montgomery Gamble. He later married the late Mrs. Alberta Jones Gamble. Survivors are: two sons, John Henry Gamble (Marguerite) of Hempstead, New York; and James Lamark Gamble of Springfield, New York; three daughters, Gloria Jelks (Hebert) of Memphis, Tennessee; and Mrs. Lelia Virginia Gamble-Hardy (John) and Mrs. Julia Brown (Jackie), both of Salters; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Parson of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
