FRED WEATHERS, JR. - KINGSTREE

Funeral services for Fred Francis Weathers, Jr., conducted by the Rev. Jack C. Washington, were held Thursday, February 25, 2010, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Florence National Cemetery in Florence. Mr. Weathers, 86, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at his residence in Kingstree. He was born October 25, 1923, a son of the late Fred Weathers, Sr. and Susan James Weathers. He was educated in Summerton and thereafter moved to Brooklyn, New York. He then enlisted into the United States Army, where he served as a T5 Clerk during World War II. His service to his country yielded him the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Award. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he continued his education in management and become a supervisor with The New York City Housing Authority. In 1975, he retired after 25 years of service. Although he had officially retired, he became an entrepreneur by owning his own taxi company. He enrolled at Williamsburg Technical College and received training in plumbing. He opened The Fred Weathers Plumbing & Septic Tank Services, Inc. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where he was past chairman of administrative board, trustee board, past lay leader, past member of the mass choir, member of the finance committee, male chorus, hospitality committee, United Methodist Men and a church volunteer for many years. He served as a life member and past president of the Williamsburg Branch of the NAACP. He was married to the late Chestina Goodwine Weather and Thelma Harrison Weathers. Survivors are: his wife, Bessie Weathers of the home; three stepsons, Everett McCready of Bronx, New York; Paul Harrison and Kenneth Harrison, both of Brooklyn, New York; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Strong (Jimmie) and Betty Cooper (James), both of Kingstree; one stepsister, Annie Riley of Miami, Florida; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
