An engineering firm inspected the Depot building on Main Street as part of Kingstree Town Council’s commitment to renovate some, if not all of the facility.
Deonne Long of CHAO and Associates met with Town Manager Dan Wells on Tuesday, June 23. Long spent three hours making notes and taking photographs of both the interior and exterior of the entire structure. Wells said the engineer will consider two sets of recommendations, one being what it will take to reopen the doors of the restaurant (formerly The Galley) and the other would be to dream big and renovate or restore the entire facility that currently houses the Amtrak train station and the Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber.
Council hired an architect firm in January but its services were terminated after its failure to produce information. Long noted there were several issues from a structural standpoint that would need to be addressed, such as the bathrooms that were built on the loading dock and the deteriorating brick walls. Long will present his initial evaluation in a few weeks.
