A collision between a car and an eighteen-wheeler truck resulted in one fatality. On Thursday, January 28, at 3 p.m., South Carolina State Troopers responded to the accident that occurred on US 521 near Salters. Ronnie McDonald of Kingstree was driving a truck loaded with woods chips eastbound on Highway 521. Carrie Lee Whitfield, 93, of Salters, was driving a Chevrolet Cavalier. Whitfield was at the intersection of Cotton Gin Road (secondary road 167) when she attempted to cross Highway 521 and was struck by the truck. After the collision, the eighteen-wheeler traveled off the right side of the roadway, where it struck a guardrail and caught fire. The driver of the truck was not injured. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
