Brown to retire

2/23/2010

After working with the public for more than 40 years, first with the USDA for 14 years and for the past 26 1/2 years as Williamsburg County Treasurer, Pearl R. Brown has announced that she will not run for re-election, and will retire when her current term ends on June 30, 2011. Mrs. Brown stated, β€œIt has been a rewarding experience to have served in a capacity that has allowed me to render honest and compassionate service to citizens of our county.”  She has chosen not to dwell on the negative, but always celebrate the positive that occurred during her tenure - such as working to provide the greatest services to the taxpayers by upgrading the office to the latest technology; investing county and school funds for increase in interest earnings; increasing the number of employees; collaborating with SC-DMV for decal issuance; allowing taxpayers to pay with debit or credit cards on site or online; as well as, in cooperation with the county finance department, implementing an integrated accounting system.
Her office, along with several other county offices, will soon open a satellite office in Hemingway. This has long been a dream of Mrs. Brown and she is happy to see it come into fruition. Recently her office has been involved with the water department in the management of their grant funds.  The water project is very important, much needed, and she is glad to be a part of this effort to bring water to the rural areas of our county.
Most importantly Mrs. Brown says β€œI thank God for the journey!”
She also thanks and applauds the voters who have supported her, her family, and her friends, who have allowed her to vent when she needed to and were there to celebrate each and every accomplishment.
Mrs. Brown stated that she plans to stay involved in community activities and her church, but most of her time will be devoted to her family.
