CLINTON McCLARY, SR. - GREELEYVILLE

Funeral services for Clinton Lee McClary, Sr., conducted by the Rev. Willie Bryant and the Rev. Amos Matthew, were held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Greeleyville.

Mr. McClary, 87, died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. He was born on September 2, 1920, a son of the late Leroy McClary and Susan McClary Burrows. He was a member of St. Asia Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville, where he sang on the choir and was a member of Trustee. He was formerly employed by Drexel Manufactory in Kingstree and retired from Georgia Pacific in Russellville.

Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Rowena Nelson McClary of Greeleyville; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Murray (Lloyd) of Staten Island, New York; one son, Clinton McClary, Jr. (Audrey) of Gaffney; two granddaughters he reared as his own, Mrs. Janice Gamble (Clifford) of Salters; and Mrs. Vanessa Sabb (Richard) of Columbia; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and one great-great-grandson.

GLENDA GREEN - GREELEYVILLE

Funeral services for Glenda Lee Green, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lewis Walker, Jr., were held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Big Spring Cemetery.

Ms. Green, 47, died Friday, May 23, 2008 at her home in Greeleyville. She was born March 5, 1961 in Greeleyville, a daughter of the late Wilbur Green and Loretta Montgomery Green. She was a member of Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville. One son, Jacque Green, preceded her in death.

Survivors are: four sisters, Mrs. Annette Montgomery of Greeleyville; Mrs. Lorraine Soule (Eugene) of Troy, New York; Gwendolyn McGill of Summerville; and Debra of Queens, New York; one niece and nephews that she reared as her own, Courtney Green, Derrick Green and Justin Green, all of Greeleyville; and two grandchildren.

LAWRENCE ARNOLD – MYRTLE BEACH

Lawrence M. “Larry” Arnold, 72, died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Grand Stand Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service, conducted by the Rev. David Marcy and the Rev. Cliff Gilmer was held Friday, May 30, 2008 at Socastee United Methodist Church, directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel.

Born in Cambridge, Ohio, he was the son of John E. and Margaret Ann Lerner Arnold. He was a band director and music educator. He was a member of and choir director for Kingstree United Methodist Church and a former member of and choir director for Socastee United Methodist Church. Mr. Arnold was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, a member and past president of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and former state chair of the Pennsylvania chapter of the American School Band Directors Association. He was preceded in death by his former wife Delores Nelson Arnold and one daughter Julie Ann Arnold.

Survivors are: his wife, Rebecca Corder Arnold of Murrells Inlet; seven sons, Timothy Arnold of Asheville, North Carolina; Jeffrey Arnold of Lore City, Ohio; Terry Arnold of Austin, Texas; Larry Arnold of Columbia; Jonathan Arnold of Winston Salem, North Carolina; Benjamin Arnold of Lebanon, Pennsylvania; and Jesse Arnold of Murrells Inlet; one daughter, Jacqueline Sue Lagneux of Cambridge, Ohio; two stepchildren, Jessica Kristitch and Christopher Kristich of Murrells Inlet; three brothers, Jack Arnold of Burbank, California; David Caygill of Palm Desert, California; and Michael Caygill of Grandview Heights, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

RICHARD DUKE - SUMMERTON

Richard Emery Duke, 57, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Morris Smith, the Rev. Kirk Carlisle and the Rev. Dr. Rodney Foster, were held Friday, May 30, 2008 in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Burial, directed by Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory, followed at Midway Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Born June 11, 1950 in Kingstree, he was a son of the late Melvin Albertus and Maudolynn D. Duke. He was chosen for service in the United States Army for the Honor Guard in Washington, DC, was employed by Federal Mogul for 29 years, and was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church in New Zion.

Survivors are: his stepmother, Sadie Roberson Duke of New Zion; one daughter, Amy Duke Morris (Darren) of Summerton; one son, Richard Emery Duke, Jr. of Manning; one sister, Shirlene Duke Blanton (Whit) of Florence; four brothers, Melvin Steven Duke (Robin) of Hartsville; Terrell O. Duke of New Zion; Glen Don Duke of Florence; and Charles Lyn Duke of Hartsville; and five grandchildren.

RONALD DEASE - ANDREWS

The Rev. Ronald James Dease, 54, the husband of the Rev. Susie W. Dease, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at the Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Celebration of Christian life and ministry, conducted by Bishop James McKenzie and the Rev. Jimmy Marsh, were held Friday, May 30, 2008 at the International Pentecostal Holiness Church Tabernacle in Lake City. Committal ceremony was held Saturday, May 31, 2008 in the Bible Temple Church Cemetery, directed by McKenzie Funeral Home.
The Rev. Dease was born September 9, 1953 in Hemingway, a son of the Rev. Jimmy Dease and Ernestine C. Dease. He was a graduate of Hemingway High School and completed several years of training with the South Carolina School of Ministry. He worked for many years at the Georgetown Mill of International Paper Company before entering full-time ministry. He was currently the pastor of the Earls Pentecostal Holiness Church. He leaves a musical legacy reaching throughout the United States as a member and then the leader of The Singing Dease Family. From 1977 to 1982, his ministry began and was devoted to traveling and singing with the family group led by his father, the Rev. Jimmie Dease. From 1987 to 1991, he began his music minister career at the Midway Holiness Church and there was appointed the named “Li Timothy” by Pastor Mildred Osborne. He continued his career in 1992 to 1997 at the East Side Free Will Baptist Church of the Pentecostal Faith; 1998 to 2003, at the Whiteville Church of God; and in October 2003, he moved to Earles Pentecostal Holiness Church. After 1 1/2 years, he was appointed as the pastor.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, are: two children, James Stephen Dease of Andrews; and Tonya D. Gates (Jim) of Cameron; his step-mother, Mary S. McCutcheon-Dease of Effingham; three brothers, Wade Dease (Mary Ann) of Coward; Brachel Dease (Alanda) of Conway; and Donald Ray Dease (Dannette) of Campbell, Kentucky; three sisters, the Rev. Ann Everett (the Rev. Wade) of N. Augusta; Sarah Nettles (Clayton) of Scranton; and Rachel Summerlin (Terry) of Florence; four step-brothers, Maxie Elwood McCutcheon (Sarah) and Dallas McCutcheon (Marilyn), both of Florence; Lavon McCutcheon (Dale) of Barnwell; and Frank James McCutcheon (Pam) of Jacksonville, Florida; one step-sister, Margaret M. Poston-Holden of Effingham; and one granddaughter.

RUTH MATHIS - KINGSTREE

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth V. McFadden Mathis, conducted by the Rev. Odell Ruffin, were held Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Antioch Churchyard Cemetery.
Mrs. Mathis died Monday, May 19, 2008 at Metropolitan Jewish Hospice in Brooklyn, New York. She was born June 13, 1955 in Kingstree, a daughter of Ruth “Blossom” McFadden and the late William “Bill” McFadden. She received her formal education from St. Mark Elementary and High School in Kingstree. She received her bachelor’s degree from The College of New Rochelle in May 2007.

She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. She was employed by a health clinic in Brooklyn, New York. She worked there for a few years before eventually being hired as an administrative assistant with the New York City Police Department.
She was married to Frederick “Freddy” Mathis.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, are: three sons, Shaun Fredrick Mathis, Dwayne William Mathis and Jason Allen Sampson, all of Brooklyn, New York; one sister, Emma Jane McFadden-Wilson (Allen) “Sonny Boy” of Kingstree; three brothers, William “Bubby” McFadden, Jr. (Christine) of Rochester, New York; Thomas and Charles McFadden, both of Kingstree; and two godchildren, Brianna Gamble and Robin Joy McFadden.

RETHA BEAUFORT - ANDREWS

Funeral services for Mrs. Retha White Beaufort, conducted by the Rev. Carl Shaw, were held Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Charity Baptist Church in Andrews. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Charity Churchyard Cemetery.

Mrs. Beaufort died Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown. She was born August 5, 1908 in Bonneau, the daughter of the late Elijah White and Solourine White. She was a member of Charity Baptist Church, where she served as Mother of the Church. She worked as a seasonal farmer.

She was married to the late James Beaufort.

Survivors are: two daughters, Lillian McCray (Clarence) of Salters; and Joyce McCray (W.C. Wallace) of the home; eight grandchildren, she raised as her own, Mary Green of Bonneau; Joyce Williams (Michael) and Charlene Beaufort, both of Andrews; Janet Smith (David) of Greensboro, North Carolina; Michael Green and Harry Beaufort, both of Lane; Paul Duncan of Myrtle Beach; Freddie Bellamy of Salters; three great-grandchildren she raised as her own, Roxana Williams of Lane; Berthram Williams of Greensboro, North Carolina; and Tyra Gamble (Anthony) of Atlanta, Georgia; one adopted daughter, Essie Mae Green of Andrews; 31 additional grandchildren; 125 great-grandchildren; 68 great-great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-great-grandchildren.

CARRIE SHIPMAN - KINGSTREE

Funeral services for Mrs. Carrie “Bell” Scott Shipman, conducted by the Rev. Rodney Gore, were held Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Clauddie Henryhand Memorial Chapel. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Salters Cemetery.

Mrs. Shipman died Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Park Village Nursing Home in Charlotte, North Carolina.
She was born September 20, 1966, the daughter of Frank and the late Shirley Mae Pendergrass Scott. She attended Green Sea Floyd Schools.

Survivors are: her husband, Wade Shipman; three children, Melissa Ann Scott, Antonio Scott and Octavia Scott, all of Charlotte, North Carolina; one step-son, Raymond Drawhorn, of Charlotte, North Carolina; four brothers, John Pendergrass (Angie) of Loris; William Scott (Marcia) of Myrtle Beach; Darrell Scott of Tabor City, North Carolina; and O’Neal Scott of North Myrtle Beach; three sisters, Barbara Sanders (Ronnie) of Marion; Frankie Scott (Kevin) of Conway and Sharlene Scott of Mullins; and four grandchildren.

DESMOND SHAW - IRMO

Funeral services for Desmond Ashley Shaw, conducted by the Rev. Clyde D. Holliday, were held Monday, June 2, 2008 at Dimery and Rogers Chapel in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Crossroad Cemetery in Salters.

Mr. Shaw, 26, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008. He was born February 25, 1982 in Sumter, a son of Ernest Dolores Shaw.

He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was a 2000 graduate of Dutch Fork High School. He attended the University of South Carolina and Midlands Technical College.

Survivors, in addition to his parents of Irmo, are: two brothers, Ernest Shaw, Jr. and Walter Ronald of Columbia; one sister, Angela Thornburg (Christopher) of Columbia; his grandparents, the Rev. Carl Shaw (Retha) of Salters; James Chandler of Kingstree; and Leola Davis of New Haven, Connecticut.

DAVID MITCHUM - TRIO

Funeral services for David Mitchum, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Herman Gibson, Jr. were held Monday, June 2, 2008 at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Andrews. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Mitchum, 93, died Thursday, May 29, 2008 at his home. He was born December 31, 1914 in Kingstree, a son of the late Sidney Mitchum and Fannie Mitchell Mitchum. He was married to the late Elizabeth Robinson.

He was a member of Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a former member of the Usher Board, the senior choir and a member of the Trustee Board. He was also a member of Gideon Masonic Lodge No. 428 of Andrews.

Survivors are: three sons, Stanley Robinson, Sr. of Kingstree; Ronnie Mitchum (Dorothy) of Moncks Corner; and Earl Mitchum (Cynthia Miller) of Kingstree; one daughter, Fannie M. Scott (Charles) of Kingstree; five sisters, Queen Wright of Trio; Catherine Cooper of Washington, DC; Ludie Brown of Bronx, New York; Mary Pressley (Claudie) of Nesmith; and Fannie M. Scott of Trio; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

THELMA ATKINSON - JOHNSONVILLLE

Thelma Soles “Mimmie” Atkinson, 71, the wife of Jack B. Atkinson, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Carolinas Hospital Systems in Florence.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Terry Poston and the Rev. John Gibbons, were held Tuesday, June 3, 2008, in the Prospect Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial, directed by the Hemingway Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, followed at Eaddy Ford Cemetery.

Mrs. Atkinson was born August 30, 1936, in Loris, a daughter of Richard Calvin “Dick” Soles and Blanche Olivia Grainger Soles.

She was a member of the Prospect Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, are: one son, Richard Jack “Rick” Atkinson of Johnsonville; two daughters, Jacquie Atkinson of Johnsonville; and Crystal Smith (Kevin) of New Zion; three sisters, Inez Norris of Tabor City, North Carolina; Dessie Small of Loris; and Bernice Prince (Roland) of Conway; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
