Don’t you wish you could control the weather? Everybody does. Who wouldn’t want to be in charge for there own purposes? Imagine going to the beach and getting the temperature just right for lying on the beach. How about getting the temperature just right and adding some low sun, long shadows for just the right cool temperature walk with your favorite jacket on? Farmers want rain. It would be great to have a nice shower late in the evening and clear and pleasant all day to get the plowing done. Wouldn’t have to wait for the fields to dry out. All that would be great. Better yet, what if we could just change the holiday to match the weather that was coming up?

I’m not talking about the month long holiday of Thanksgiving Christmas. That holiday has a life of its own. It seems like you have a month of travel, shopping and planning and fighting family, weather and retail pricing. People merely go wild and stay wild for about a month. Almost every kind of weather can be experienced in that time.

What we really need to be able to change is the rest of the holidays. The Monday holidays are not too bad. You can plan on a long weekend. Occasionally, you have a holiday that is on a weekday and you get one day off and then it is back to work. That really throws you off.

Here is my plan for solving the problem of matching weather and holidays. This MLK day was the perfect example. What if we could move the day to suit the weather? MLK day was on Monday. I know you heard about all the football games that comprised the playoffs. I know you heard about the bad weather that plagued some of the games. You might realize that some of the games were postponed and rescheduled.

The weather channels had a wonderful time telling you that your holiday would have the same cold temperature in Fahrenheit and Celsius. That’s negative 40 degrees in case you didn’t want to convert it. That’s too cold no matter where you are going.

We should just move the holiday to a good weather day. A rainy cold Saturday and Sunday could be changed to a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday holiday. We would still use Saturday and Sunday to catch up on inside chores and prepare for a wonderful holiday during the week.

Going back to work on Thursday wouldn’t be so bad. You could tell your coworkers what a wonderful holiday you had and then it would be Friday. Time to get ready for the weekend. Problem solved.

It seems like we have to fight weather and the day of the week most of the time. A beautiful workweek becomes a windy mess on Saturday and Sunday. Church picnic scheduled brings 45 mph winds with jump castles and trampolines spread out over the countryside.

While we are at it, let’s throw in road repairs too. Even with good weather, driving through a construction zone can stress a vacation just as bad as the weather can. Ever have to listen to your friend tell about having to wait for road construction woes and how he got home at midnight after a grueling drive? I know, it’s about as boring as seeing paint dry.

It is a lot more fun to hear about a leisurely drive to a game, sports, fishing, hunting or picnic with perfect weather. Kids are well behaved, wife happily reading catalogs and figuring out her shopping needs and dad making good time on a new paved road is the best kind of trip.

If only I could be in charge. I would try to adjust the holidays and make this happen. The logistics of that, well that’s another story.
