Miracle Cooper shared a stage with United States Vice President Kamala Harris at King Day at the Dome at the South Carolina State House on January 15. The theme of the day was Ballots for Freedom, Ballots for Justice, Ballots for Change! The Kingstree High School Junior is the president of the SC NAACP Youth Conference.  She spoke on behalf of her family, fellow students, staff at the Kingstree High School and all the NAACP youth and adult members throughout the state in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his sacrifice, legacy and his dream.

Cooper says the event was pretty scary but fun, and she felt confident about her speech. “I didn't talk to the Vice President personally, but she did shake my hand and gave me a touch on the face which felt good because she knows I exist.”

“Speaking at this event meant a lot because I got to show people around me that no matter where you come from or what environment you are in, anything can happen if you let it,” says Cooper.

Cooper was given a Commendation certificate from the Williamsburg County School District Superintendent Dr. Kelvin Wymbs at the School Board meeting on Monday, February 26.

In a video played at the meeting, Cooper’s English teacher, Anita Gethers said about Cooper, “She has a passion for learning like no other, but what I find to be truly impressive about her is that she will always stand up for what is right. I’m so thrilled and honored to be able to give her praise for all the work she is doing and becoming a leader for the future of her community.”

School Board Chair Marva Cannion expressed her pride in Cooper at the meeting by saying, “In Williamsburg County, we have the best scholars in the state. What an honor to be on the stage with our Vice President Kamala Harris.  Continue your leadership skills and we look to see the great things you are going to continue to do in the future.”

After high school, Cooper plans to study psychology at SC State University. She also would like to study cosmetology. Cooper was joined by her grandmother, Grace Cooper, at the Board meeting.
