Two Williamsburg County juveniles have been taken into custody on allegations of threatening M.B. Lee Middle School in Hemingway.

According to the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s office, deputies responded to the school Jan. 25 in response to a shooting threat called into the campus. The school was placed on lockdown for a period of time, however police said there were no active shooters at the school.

M.B. Lee Middle School staff gave the deputies the phone number that called the school, and after an investigation at the associated home, police were allegedly able to identify two juveniles as the callers, according to a release.

The sheriff’s office said the two juveniles were taken to the Hemingway Police Department and after an interview, investigators allege that the suspects called the middle school twice, saying they were “going to shoot up the school.” They were taken to the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice because of their ages.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division assisted with the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

The Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office said if anyone has any information regarding the incident, they should contact the Criminal Investigation Division at (843) 355-6381.
