Four Williamsburg County student artists have been selected to participate in the prestigious Artfields Art Competition and Festival April 26 — May 4 in Lake City.

Young artists from across South Carolina submitted their work online for the annual show. The art was judged by a review panel on creativity and originality, quality of composition and overall design, technical ability, and overall impression of the art. Then, artists with the highest scores are selected to participate in the Artfields Jr. exhibits.

The following artists have been selected for Artfields Jr. 2024: Connor Sales of Kingstree (Elementary, Grades 3-5 category), Will Dozier of Hemingway (Elementary, Grades 3-5 category), Cruzado Tann of Greeleyville, (Middle, Grades 6-8 category), and Samia Alston of Kingstree (Secondary, Grades 9-12 category).

In conjunction with ArtFields, ArtFields Jr. was founded to recognize and celebrate the artistic talent of students in grades 1-12. This program was created to provide creative outlets to inspire children who have been typically underserved in the fine arts. Originally, submissions were only open to students from Lake City, but in 2016, after overwhelming support and positive feedback, ArtFields Jr. expanded to include students from the state of South Carolina. Every year, the ArtFields Jr. exhibition showcases the overwhelming talent of students from all over the state and inspires thousands of visitors in the process.

ArtFields Jr. allows students the opportunity to express themselves through creative thinking while also displaying their talents in a professional manner, unlike most other art competitions and showcases.

“This year, we have 330 works of art that were accepted into the ArtFields Jr. Competition,” says Aba K. Kwofie, Artfields Jr. Education Coordinator.

Artfields Jr. exhibits can be found during the Artfields Art Competition and Festival in the following locations:

Primary (Grades 1-2) and Middle (Grades 6-8) will be at 144 S. Acline St.

Elementary (Grades 3-5) will be at O.T. Hall at 126 N. Acline St.

Secondary (Grades 9-12) will be at Polyphony Music and Divine Dance Studio at 133 W. Main St.

During the competition, visitors can find maps, field guides, and other information at the Welcome Center, located at 130 N. Acline Street.

The Student Choice Award will be judged by students. More than 2,000 kids are scheduled to attend Artfields on fieldtrips. They will be given paper ballots to select their favorite art. Artfields Jr. partner SC Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities will present a special awards category and winner this year, as well. All ArtFields Jr. winners qualify for the ArtFields Jr. Traveling Exhibition.
