Elise Phillips, a senior at Kingstree High School was officially named a GATES Millennium Scholar. She is in the class of 2024 at Kingstree High School with a 4.9 GPA and plans to major in Civil Engineering. She was notified on April 20 as a 2024 Gates Millennium Scholar recipient.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide outstanding African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. Continuing Gates Millennium Scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of the following discipline areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science.

The beginning stages of the scholarship process for her consisted of general (school attending, high school classes, current classes, extracurricular activities, etc.) and financial information regarding her and her guardian’s household income. The semi-finalist stage required the completion of four essays based on the given topics, at least two recommendations, a confirmation email from FAFSA, a resume, and a headshot. The program announced the chosen finalists on March 1, and the scholarship interviews were conducted throughout March.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program offers support for the cost of education by covering unmet needs and self-help aid. Renewable awards for Gates Millennium Scholars maintaining satisfactory academic progress. Graduate school funding for continuing Gates Millennium Scholars in the areas of computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science. Leadership development programs with distinctive personal, academic, and professional growth opportunities.
