The Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber presented the July Image Award to Chavis One Stop, county satellite offices. According to County Supervisor Stanley Pasley, the One Stop office complex had been a vision for the Hemingway area for over 25 years. Understanding the difficulty that some residents had traveling from Hemingway to Kingstree to conduct county business, local officials discussed the possibility of providing a satellite site in Hemingway. However, funds and office space were always the issues in making the dream come true. In September 2007, the Francis Marion University Foundation advocated the development of a local leadership capacity building enterprise in three pilot communities with funds from FMU and the PSARAS Foundation. Williamsburg County was one of the counties selected to participate in the project. The Rural Leadership Institute convened providing leadership training over several months while requiring the development of a final community project. Collaborating with the Williamsburg County School District and using creative means such as county maintenance employees and inmate labor to remodel the old Chavis School, the Chavis One Stop Facility for government agencies opened in March of 2010. Originally, eight offices opened at the Hemingway site and today that number has increased substantially. Most county governmental offices are located at the Hemingway site and provide services several days a week for the convenience of local residents. The sheriff’s office has a presence in Hemingway every day and future plans include a satellite office for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Mr. Pasley proudly noted that with Waccamaw’s Early Head Start and Vital Aging being under one roof at Chavis, the site can claim to be an intergenerational facility. Located on 23 acres of land, the supervisor has additional plans that include a recreational park and walking trails at the Hemingway site. However, regardless of all the amenities of the Chavis Site, the most important task is making sure Hemingway residents are aware that county services are now provided in their area. Chavis One Stop is located at 2811, State Highway 41-51, Hemingway. For more information call (843) 558-4145.
