David Hampton, Kingstree - Funeral services for David “Sarg” Hampton, conducted by the Rev. Brian L. Williams and the Rev. Dr. Frankie D. White, were held Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Greater Bethel AME Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Duke’s Cemetery of Kingstree with military honors.
Mr. Hampton died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was born January 20, 1936, in Mullins, the son of the late Junious Wade Hampton and Frances McCray Hampton. Two siblings, James Hampton and Mrs. Rosa Hampton Forrester, preceded him in death. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated from Tomlinson High School. He was a member of Greater Bethel AME Church. In 1972, he relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey, where he attended St. Michael Methodist Church of Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1956, he joined the United States Army. He served on active duty for 13 years and received an honorable discharge as Sgt. David Hampton. He was self-employed as a plumber for 30 years. He was married to the former Eartha Lee Hayward.Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Deborah Hampton Ray (Ben) of Adrian, Michigan; three sisters: Symethia Hampton of New Haven, Connecticut; and Mrs. Millie Fulton (Wallace) and Mary Hampton, both of Cades; one brother, Theodore Hampton, Sr. of Kingstree; and three grandsons.
