Hemingway man charged with criminal sexual assault with a minor

A former schoolteacher has been charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor - third degree. According to reports, Charles Leo Demay, 78, of East Society Street in Hemingway was arrested Wednesday after the victim's family reported the incident to Hemingway police.   According to a Williamsburg County Sheriff's Office booking report Demay was also charged with disseminating obscene material to a person under the age of 18 and providing persons under the age of 18 with tobacco products.  Christopher McKagen of The Weekly Observer interviewed local law enforcement that stated the incident occurred at Demay's residence.   After the alleged incident occurred the victim returned home and told a family member. The family member then contacted the police. Law enforcement also said during a taped interview with police, Demay admitted the assault occurred. At that time he was arrested. Demay was booked into the Williamsburg County Detention Center where he remains.     Criminal sexual conduct with a minor - third degree is a Class D Felony and can carry up to 15 years in prison. Disseminating harmful materials to a minor is a Class F Felony and can carry up to a 10-year prison sentence. On Friday, May 9, The News left messages at the Hemingway Police Department requesting an interview with Chief Bryan Todd. The Hemingway Police Department continue to investigate the case. Law enforcement are asking any potential victims of similar incidents to contact the Hemingway office at 843-558-2424.
