Master Eric Jones is a Tae Kwon Do instructor in Kingstree. Jones Tae Kwon Do students competed in the South East US Tae Kwon Do Championship in Asheville, North Carolina on April 5. In addition to medals, the team won multiple trophies and gained much confidence for the newly formed group.
Master Jones graduated from Kingstree Senior High in 1995 and began training while stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas with the Air Force. His training in the Air Force gave him a passion for the Tae Kwon Do and the Martial Arts. He has trained in Kempo Karate, ninjutsu, boxing, and specializes in WTF (World Tae Kwon Do Federation). Jones accredits most of his tae kwon do training to studies in Japan and Hawaii.
He competed in the Hawaii Open Tournament in 2006 where he won gold for breaking and sparring. Following Hawaii, Jones continued his training in Korea. “That was a real eye opener: to be trained in the birthplace of Tae Kwon Do,” said Jones. “It was like starting over as a white belt, but I did attain my forth degree black. ”
Master Jones’ class consists of eight students ranging from ages five to 34.
“Everyone has been here since day one,” said Jones of his team. “I have seen a difference in children who take my class. I wanted more for the kids here. I am able to tailor a program to the needs of the community.” Jones Tae Kwon Do accepts all children, including children with special needs. He has a child with autism in his group and he performed a kicking and breaking demonstration at the Behind the Len’s/ Autism Awareness Easter Egg Hunt.
Jones’ philosophy is “I wanted to have something else positive besides basketball, football, softball- not that there is anything wrong with those, but it is all that we saw in this area,” said Jones. “You can only play basketball for so long, but martial arts can be done til the day you leave this world.” Classes offered three days a week at the Williamsburg County Recreation Center on Thurgood Marshall Highway.
