Local businessman Chalmers Hammet was arrested Friday night after he and Kingstree Town Manager Dan Wells had words. The April 25, incident occurred at the Railroad Auction in Kingstree.
According to a Kingstree Police Dept. Incident Report the men exchanged words after Wells spoke to Hammet as he entered the business. According to the report, Wells told law enforcement during their brief conversation Hammet stated he had something for him (Wells). Wells said Hammet then looked down at his right side and made a hand gesture in the shape of a gun and said he was going to give it to him real soon. Well’s also stated to police that he was afraid for his life.
When police arrived, Hammet confirmed he had seen Wells and that Wells had spoken to him according to the report. However, Hammet disputed Wells’ claims, saying he only said he would “get him legally.” Hammet was arrested and charged with threatening the life of a public official and taken to the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Detention Center.
The News attempted to contact Hammet, but as of press time, was unsuccessful.
