Johnny Salters, Kingstree

Funeral services for Johnny “John” Salters, conducted by the Rev. S. A. Green and the Rev. Charlie Fulton, were held Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church of Salters. Burial, directed by Redmond-RichardsonFuneral Home, followed at Florence National Cemetery of Florence.
Mr. Salters died Friday, April 11, 2014, at McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence. He was born October 8, 1935, in Salters, the son of the late Jeffrey Salters, Sr. and Bertha Fulton Salters.  Six siblings, Jeffrey Salters, Jr., Jessie Salters, Lawrence Salters, Leroy Salters, Florine Burgess and Sadie Mae Battle, preceded him in death. He was a member of Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board, Trustee Board, Assistant Sunday school teacher, Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and as Church Treasurer for 15 years. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County and was a 1955 graduate of Tomlinson High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army on October 15, 1958. His overseas tour of duty included Germany, Hawaii, Korea and Vietnam. After serving his country for over 20 years, he retired as a 1st Sergeant in 1978. Upon retiring, he attended Williamsburg Technical College, where he earned his certification in auto mechanics. To advance in auto mechanics, he attended Smithfield Technical College in Smithfield, North Carolina, where he received his certification as a technician in auto mechanics and small engine repairs. He was employed for five years with the Sunbeam Manufacturing Company of Manning.
Survivors are:  his wife, Martha O. Salters of the home; six children, Sharol V. Salters-Foster (Kenneth) of Rosedale, New York; Timothy L. Salters and Turnmirel Sa Juan Salters, both of Lane; Shelia M. Salters of Columbia; and Tyrone Salters (Cassandra) and Terrell Salters, both of Kingstree; one brother, Elmer Adam Salters of New Haven, Connecticut; and 12 grandchildren.
