John H. Bartell, Jr. appointed Williamsburg County Sherriff

  • Thursday, February 27, 2014

On Wednesday, February 26, Governor Nikki Haley appointed John H. Bartell, Jr. as Sheriff of Williamsburg County. Governor Haley suspended Sheriff Michael Johnson from office on February 19 after he was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Johnson, along with Lester L. Woods of Columbia was charged in a one-count indictment. Bartell will serve as Sheriff until Johnson is acquitted, or the indictment is otherwise disposed of, or until a sheriff is elected in the next general election, whichever comes first. The News February 26 edition reported that Jack McCrea was appointed Interim Sheriff. The News regrets if this caused any confusion.
