Funeral services for Rebecca “Beck” Gibson, conducted by the Rev. Willie Bryant and Pastor Terry Dinkins, were held Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Union Missionary Baptist Church of Salters. Ms. Gibson died Tuesday, January 28, 2014. She was born June 23, 1946, in Salters, the daughter of the late Otis Gibson and Julia Scott Gibson. She grew up in Union Baptist Church and was baptized at Brown Memorial Baptist Church of Brooklyn, New York. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County, where she graduated from Williamsburg Training School, which is currently C.E. Murray High in 1964. After graduating high school, she moved to Brooklyn, New York to continue her education at Wilfred Academy Beauty School, where she obtained her license in cosmetology. She worked 34 years with New York City Transit Authority. After retiring, she moved to Chesapeake, Virginia. Two brothers, Otis, Jr., and Raymond Gibson, preceded her in death. Survivors are: two daughters, Sheila D. Gibson of Salters; and Lisa Baker (Curtis) of Chesapeake, Virginia; two sisters, Martha Belle Gibson of Salters; and Joanie Nickerson of Kingstree; three brothers, Archie Gibson (Virginia), Jessie Gibson (Frances) and Leon Gibson (Leola), all of Salters; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
