Bertha Starks, Pineville

Funeral services for Mother Bertha Lee Gilliard Starks, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Mitchell and Pastor Edna Mack, were held Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Jehovah United Methodist Church of Pineville. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Jehovah United Methodist Church Cemetery of Pineville. Mother Starks died Saturday, January 25, 2014, at her residence in St. Stephen. She was born January 1, 1925, in Eutawville, the daughter of the late Henry “Butch” Gilliard and Ella Richburg Gilliard. She was married to Isiah Cornelius Starks. Four children, Thomas Starks, Melvin Cornelius Starks, Alfreda Starks Blanding and Henry Lee Starks, preceded her in death. She was a member of the Jehovah United Methodist Church of Pineville, where she was a Communion Table Usher, member of the Senior Choir and kitchen helper. Survivors are: 10 children, Annie Mae Starks Johnson, Isiah Lemyer Starks (Earnestine), Joseph Starks (Fecelia), Pastor Edna Mack (Edward, Sr.), Maude Croker (Samuel), Josephine Middleton (Isaac), Wilson Calvin Starks (Marie), John Starks (Nina), Frances Bennett (Elder Alonza), and Mary Ella Starks Gadsden; two brothers, Willie Galliard and Wesley Galliard; three sisters, Mattie Mae Watson, Agnes Doctor, and Kathleen Brown; two grandchildren raised in the home, James W. Starks and Jennifer Rose (Bernard); 32 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
