Verdell Barr, Kingstree

Funeral services for Attorney Verdell Barr, conducted by the Rev. J. Jeannetté Cooper, were held Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church of Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Elijah United Methodist Churchyard Cemetery. Mr. Barr died Friday, November 15, 2013. He was born June 12, 1954, in Williamsburg County, the son of Samuel David Barr and Mamie L. Barr. He received his early formal education at Anderson Elementary School of Kingstree and graduated from Kingstree Senior High School in 1972. Thereafter, he attended Tuskegee Institute of Tuskegee, Alabama, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science in 1975 and graduated with a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1978. He worked as a supervisor for Bell Telephone Company after graduating from law school for approximately five years, then entered the general private practice of law. He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent from 2010 through 2013. Survivors are: his wife, Lorraine D. Barr of Kingstree; one daughter, Akilah King (Kelsey) of Statesboro, Georgia; six siblings, Eddie L. Barr of Kingstree; Attorney Charles David Barr of Greeleyville, Ruth Breland of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Bernice Pilgrim (Phillip) of Silver Spring, Maryland; Harriet Adamson of Laurel, Maryland; and James Adamson (Ludresha) of Columbia; and three grandchildren.
