Olive Madge Frierson DeCaro, 90, a Georgetown County resident, died Thursday, November 21, 2013. The life of Olive DeCaro was honored with a service Friday, November 22, 2013, at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church of Greeleyville, officiated by her brother-in-law, the Rev. Charles B. Dawkins. Born in Kingstree, in July 1923, she was the daughter of John Samuel and Clennie Haselden Frierson. She was the wife of Georgetown merchant and shoemaker Salvatore DeCaro, the founding owner of Sal’s Repair and Boot Shop. She left home to work at a defense plant in Georgia in support of the war effort. There she met and married her husband, Sal, a New York native and Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps. Survivors are: four children, Mary DeCaro “Cookie” Harvey, Dr. Thomas Joseph DeCaro, Frances DeCaro Briley, and Daniel Salvatore DeCaro; three sisters, Nell Frierson Altman, Sue Frierson Easler, and Betty Frierson Dawkins; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Tidelands Community Hospice, 2591 N. Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC 29440.
