Funeral services for Mrs. Lula “Lou” Barr were held Saturday, November 9, 2013, at New Friendship Freewill Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Barr died Tuesday, November 5, 2013, in Florence. She was born February 9, 1921, in Williamsburg County, the daughter of the late William and Maebelle Bradley Owens. She was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church, where she served on the Mother’s Board, Missionary Board and was overjoyed to sing with the Gospel Choir. She was married to the late Albert Barr. “Miss Lou” as she was called by the younger folk, was a domestic worker for many years. She serve the families of the late Winston Holiday, Sr., Winston Holiday Jr., the Lockharts, Dan Cox, Ms. Martin, Mrs. Mosley, Mrs. Joy Dukes and Mrs. T.J. Burgess. In December 2012 Jeff and Matt Burgess retired her after many years of service. She was a seamstress, which inspired many of her nieces to become professional designers. She was a member of the Sons and Daughters of the King Solomon Lodge. Three siblings Robert Owens, John Tommie Owens and Willie G. Owens, preceded her in death. Survivors are: one daughter, Alberta (Lincoln) of Miami Gardens, Florida; a grandson reared as a son, Paul Lee Burgess, Jr. of Kingstree; a special niece, Mazie Lawson, reared in the home for some years; two additional grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
